Was there any point in him being an Albino?

Did that even matter in the movie? I mean it says Noi the Albino, but they have no further mention of it. So why did they even bother to mention it in the title. While watching the movie, I didn't even think or care to bring light to the fact that he was an Albino, and neither did any character in the movie... you guys tell me...

reply

I think it's because he looks like an albino and albinoi rhymed with Noi. Movie titles aren't always litteral.

reply

He wasn't an albino, he was just an outkast like every albino is in a way i guess.

I'm albino, and I'm not, by anymeans, an outcast. I have, and have always had, a very healthy social life with many friends. I'm really quite sick and tired of how people with albinism are protrayed in popular culture. This isn't the only film to do this there are quite a few. Films like this cause nearly all misconceptions about people with albinism And, frankly, as a film student, I'm going to cause a lot of hell about this in a few yaers.

Oh, and please refrain from calling people with albinism albinos. That's like calling someone in a wheelchare a cripple. It's so ignorant, it stips us of our personhood and makes us soley our condition.

reply

jennyo30 if you think saying albino why did you say im "I'm albino" and what would not be offensive to say?

reply

RE jennyo30's post - I didn't think that Albinism was relevant to Noi's being an outcast at all. There was no connection made at all there as far as I could see! You seem to be making it an issue where it isn't.

So what are we people without albinism (or without for that matter) supposed to called people with albinism? What is the acceptable noun for a 'Person with albinism'? Just whining about a label you don't like without supplying a viable alternative does not help us people without (insert particular human genetic variable here) to be polite. We all carry labels. I'm middle-aged and Scottish and Bang! you have an image in your head.
I'm tired of the way middle-aged Scottish people are portrayed in movies. I don't live in tenement and I'm not a violent drunk/drug user. Calling me "a person from Scotland" isn't going to change a damn thing about the way Scottish middle-aged men are portrayed in movies.

I'm not a label. Nor are you. People don't strip you of your 'personhood' unless you let them and wearing a different label isn't going to help.

Making great films that tackle the subject may. Be strong. I look forward to seeing yours. Really. I mean it. Good luck.

he was someone special, someone that stands out, like a albino does

the director said something about wanting to make him as alien-looking as possible. as in a real outer space alien. that being to go toward the idea that he really doesn't belong there. or maybe anywhere.

wow, i didn't know that the biblical noah was cosidered an albino. this is beside the point but i'd really like to have some refferences about that. where can i read such evidence about noah?

Noah is also NOAH - The National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation

reply

I've never heard that Noah in the Bible was an albino, but in reference to this movie, I've read that Noi is the name of Noah in the Icelandic translation of the Bible. That posting went on to point out that perhaps this movie's title character was given that name to parallel the fates of the two characters. An interesting observation. Dagur Kari, the writer/director, gives some great information in the DVD's "making of" documentary, but I wish he'd done an audio commentary as well.

he naturally has no hair in real life, and in iceland albinoi is just a rhyming surname for noi. he's not literally supposed to be albino in the movie.

The reason for the name is not the literal meaning, there is a long tradition of most people in small town Iceland having nicknames like that. It rhymes, he looks a bit albino and he doesn't fit in.

reply

i agree with some that the idea that noi is an albino or made to look like an albino is the demonstrate the isoalation and alienation he feels from living where he lives. perhaps the idea that he feels he doesnt belong there, as he is wanting to leave and go to the beach scene.

reply

I think that the director is using Noi's appearance just to simply strengthen the idea that he does not fit into any part of his surroundings.

reply

It gives him depth as a character.

The details make the bigger picture.

I think that it sounds like a nick name children would give someone. not necessarily a bad of a mean thing, just something that rhymes and is a nick name. I think it's also a way of making him stand out.

reply

right folks so he isn't albino ... he has alopecia... but Noi the Alopeciac doesn't sound the same as Noi the Albino... and Alopeciac probably isn't even a real word ... what a fascinating world we live in!
