One thing doesn't make sense....*SPOILER*

How did Zhaoyang expect to collect any money when he killed his partner at the end? Jinming was pretending to be the boy's uncle, so he was the only one that could have collected on the boy's death, and vice versa. Zhaoyang couldn't have collected any money from either of their deaths because he wasn't a relative. Was he just being irrational?

Please correct me if that isn't how the system works.

I think it was just a plot device so that his partner could "come back to life" and save the kid (i.e., to redeem himself)...

I don't think it was so much being a relative as it was a witness. They both had to sign waivers saying the mine death was an accident. Zhaoyang didn't care for the mine, was ready to move on and was worried his partner would ruin his scam. I'm guessing he would have found himself a new partner and carried on until he was either caught, or ended up like he ended up.

I guess he wanted to off both and collect twice for keeping his mouth shut.

He would have received less per head, but there's two people dead this time ànd he doesn't have to share the money. Which is better than getting nothing whilst waiting for his partner to FINALLY do the kid in.

I am not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

... whilst waiting for his partner to FINALLY do the kid in.

Plus a growing (and perhaps justified) suspicion that his partner would back out of the plan altogether.

This is a valid arguement. Good observation. The reason why they fake the boy to be his neaphew is YES - relatives collects money, that has always been the grammar since the beginning of the film, and true in real world.

The only reason I can think of is Zhaoyang just knocked Jinming unconscious, so he can kill the kid. That is why Jinming is not really dead...

When they first are interviewed for the job at the mine the foreman asks them why they left their last job and they tell him that the last mine was closed because someone was killed and the story leaked out to the authorities. The whole extortion plot revolves around them keeping the boy's death quiet, it isn't really a case of claiming compensation but hush money, I believe.

I think both explanations are correct. The manager is not going to pay the hush money out of his own pocket. To reclaim it from the mine owners it is probably better to claim that it was an informal "insurance" payment to the family.
