What happened after the exchange?

I saw Part 1, which ended with Maria getting out of the car to be exchanged for her son.
What happened in Part 2?
Did the kid win the war for the Allies? And was that American his real dad?
The SS guys showed up and demanded Maria. They and Laemmle's thugs started shooting. A bullet hit Maria's car and it and she were blown up. Quartermain rescued Thomas, who didn't want much to do with him at first, because he actually liked Quatermain and everyone else who had loved him had gotten killed. Quatermain was presumably his real dad, although we are never certain. As he said, "It doesn't matter whether I am or not."
