As Duragizer said, it was a figure of speech. The guy was complaining that Ray suddenly "found religion" or saw the light (another Christian figure of speech). In other words, Ray was seeing the truth of what the protesters were saying - that it was wrong to perform in segregated Georgia (figures of speech like these being common in a southern bible belt state like Georgia, of course).
