Reflections of Evil - INLAND EMPIRE (David Lynch) REFLECTED BACK!

Now, I'm not claiming that Lynch likes to take others' concepts wholesale and then use them in his whole work but noticed certain striking reflections between INLAND EMPIRE and the film REFLECTIONS OF EVIL :

- In IE there is at the very start mention of a reflection and evil being born.

- Both films feature coughing up blood on the sidewalk in Hollywood.

- The main character in REFLECTIONS is a watch salesman - then in INLAND there is the character who sells watches to give good luck - the extra scenes on the bonus 2 disk DVD feature a long scene involving the watch sales.

Going back to 1990/1, the Norweigan pop band A-ha did contact Lynch about directing a video for them, sending along songs from their latest album including Sycamore Leaves as one of those tracks. Their songwriter Paul Waaktar-Savoy actually took Lynch to court over Lynch using the song and altering the title to Sycamore Trees and claiming that the melody line was similar. I think there was enough similarity to see some influence but not an outright bit of plagiarism at all. I also think Lynch is such a workaholic that he wouldn't stop often enough to ponder such things.

So the same thing goes with REFLECTIONS OF EVIL, Damon Packard's slightly earlier experimental film. Seems like Lynch has seen it at least.

To be frank, I haven't watched all of REFLECTIONS OF EVIL as I hate watching films online on a laptop. Hopefully I can figure out how to solve that problem !

Probably some truth to that but it doesn't really matter at the end of the day. The same thing happens with music all the time. People are inspired by something and then take it to another level and if it turns out great then I'm happy.
