I think this could be longly debated on but my list would go something like this, I won't put numbers because all of them can't be compared and competed against. Glenn Danzig Monkey (the Adicts) no one can sing like he can... no one Joey Ramone others that I believe are up there but not quite with that group are: Jorge-The Casualties Greg Gaffin - Bad Religion Jello Biafa- Dead Kennedys, he is very close to the top for me though
By the way any one thinking of putting Davey Havok on this list don't AFI is not punk it is whiny crying emo music
Jello Biafra - Dead Kennedys Henry Rollins - Black Flag Keith Morris - Black Flag, Circle Jerks Darby Crash - Germs Brody Dalle - Distillers Fat Mike - NOFX Matt Caughthran - the Bronx Johnny Rotten - Sex Pistols Al Barr and Ken Casey - Dropkick Murphys
thank you sparkify! dexter holland has punk but melodic, [have you heard his extended 'woahs'!] i like the johnny rotten punk voice, and joe strummer because he could shout AND sing.
There are 2 types of people in the world; those who load their gun and those who dig.You dig
How about Ben Weasel? *beep* voice ever but it sounds so good. Joey Vindictive, can it get anymore nasily then that? Joe Queer(King), How can he sound so nasily sometimes, but then sing so high to do an awesome beach boys cover.
Jack Grisham - TSOL Greg Graffin - Bad Religion (up to Against the Grain and then he lost it) Fat Mike - NOFX Jello Biafra - DK Tony Cadena - Adolescents Rick Froberg - Drive Like Jehu (not old scool but punk in spirit)
Dave Vanian is, IMO, the greatest vocalist of all time... Johnny Rotten fitted so well with the Pistols' music and I really like his voice in PiL too, although it'd changed by then. Sid Vicious was also rather good, if you listen to the Vicious White Kids and 'Sid Sings' and what he did on 'The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle' with "C'Mon Everybody", "Something Else" and, lol; "My Way"...
I would have to say the best punk singers are in order
1)joey rammone 2) justin sane 3)fat mike 4)pat thetic 5)davey havock 6) jonny rotten OH YEAH JOHNNY ROTTEN IS EVEN LUCY TO BE ON THIS LIST CUZ THE SEX PISTOLS SUCKED SID COULDNT EVEN PLAY BASS THEY UNPLUGGED HIS AMP WHEN THEY DID LIVE SHOWS AND THE SEX PISTOLS WERE CREATED TO START A CLOTHING LINE BUT NO ONE EVER TALKS ABOUT THAT REAL PUNK TALKIN ABOUT ANARCHY IN THE UK YET THEY WORKED FOR THE COPORATE MACHINE
I also like sid vicious as a singer, his version of "my way" was terrific, sure, the sex pistols were manufactured, but that was 30 years ago, why should it matter now?.
My list would definately include: Glenn Danzig - Misfits Johnny Rotten - Sex Pistols Jello Biafra - Dead Kennedys Keith Morris - Bleck Flag
No one could imitate their voices. Except for Morris, they all defined their band's sound and image. The ghoulishness of Danizg, the sarcasm of Jello, the insanity of Morris, and bitterness of Rotten are all priceless soundbites in punk history.
And by the way, in response to the guy bashing the Sex Pistols: You're missing the whole point. The band was based on irony and sarcasm. They couldn't believe they were getting away with all the things they were doing. Hell, they admitted they were happy to take EMI's money in "The Great Rock n' Roll Swindle." They cheated the system, they knew it, and they sat back and laughed as all these companies that they hated threw money at them. Wise up moron and think for a second. If you don't want to think and want things spoonfed to you listen to Green Day or some garbage like that. P.S. Turn off your damned caps lock key.
Sorry to tell you this but Steve Jones started the band before Malcolm McClaren even got involved. Do some research the next time, before you sound yet again like a pompous idiot.
kjv500 all though i respect that u put justin sane on ur list however davey havock should not because his stupid ass band are not punk and dont ever talk *beep* again about the sex pistols and by the way glen matlock is the bass player for the pistols not sid he only played a few live shows. If u think the pistols suck then u really not very little about punk rock. thank u 4 ur time
Ian - Minor Threat Jorge - The Casualties Johnny Rotten - The Sex Pistols Darby Crash - The Germs Keith Morris - Black Flag, Circle Jerks Wattie Buchan - The Exploited Jack Grisham - TSOL Colin McFaul - Cock Sparrer Jimmy Pursey - Sham 69
morons my age think "punk" is squeaky clean music with 3 chords (thanks for screwing the image GREEN GAY!). They also think my "punk views" are opinion. They are NOT. Punk has guidelines like everything else. You wouldn't call Metallica "classical" because they don't sound like it. These new "punk" bands don't sound like punk. They have no *beep* idea.
I like my music LOUD, AGRESSIVE, ANTISOCIAL, SLOPPY, DRUNKEN, and SELF DESTRUCTIVE. In the words of the Casualties (in their song "Static and Feedback"), "I need anger in my brain!!!" I need somethin to smash *beep* to while gettin loaded.
and to who said: "dicky barrett (mighty mighty bosstones) no one can match his scratchy vocals." This thread is Best PUNK singers. That's not punk. I guess it would be Ska (don't know for sure, don't listen to that *beep*
i cant believe noones mentioned billie joe from green day. no matter how much you think they have sold out, he still has the best voice in the industry as we speak.
I'm not trying to make you mad or anything, but Green Day never really claimed they're music was punk so...yeah just would like to point that out. If they're punk anything, they'd be punk pop and that's not straight punk so not really anything to get defensive on there..*sigh* I wish people would just leave them alone.
As far as old school I would have to say either Glenn danzig or Joey ramone
newer bands Matt Skiba -alkaline Trio Greg Graffin- Bad Religion Davey Havok- AFI Greg From the bouncing souls Tony-No use for a name Dave -the vandals
Come on, where's Steve Ignorant, Nick Blinko, Tom Gabel, and the Stza, among others?? Though I do agree with mostly everyone's choices. Glenn Danzig is the greatest singer of all time.
dont mind the email address its my sisters, jello biafra, ironic name... mass produced junk food followed by starvation. not the best punk singer but definatley one of the coolest sounding ones. best punk singer is an oxymoron, punk is supposed to be no talent required, just a sneer and an opinion are needed. little sarcasm there for ya... but really jello is awesome and so was rotten and above all chris aka glen lambert from propagandhi
