Eulogy vs. Little Miss Sunshine

My friends compared this movie to Little Miss Sunshine I guess because of the dysfunctional family aspect, but they hated Little Miss Sunshine because "a comedy can't be a drama as well." Personally I absolutely hated every second of Eulogy and when it was over, I asked my friends if they preferred this poorly-made unfunny mess over Little Miss Sunshine and they said yes. I don't know if I can talk to my friends anymore. Would anyone side with my friends over me?

I actually really enjoyed this movie, but I love dysfunctional family stories. If I were comparing, I think Little Miss Sunshine was better, but they were very different subjects, so it's kind of hard to compare. I'm curious about what you didn't like about this movie and how it was a mess?

reply

I didn't think it was funny at all... didn't even crack a smile. I hated all the characters and even the casting of those characters. Most of all, it just got so ridiculous: the grandma jumping out of the moving van and flying through the air, the blowing up of the coffin, etc.

I didn't think it was laugh out loud funny, but it was entertaining. Maybe because I wish my grandma would jump from a car.

Both were terminally average, but not without their merits. They both ended.

Little Miss Sunshine is one of the most over-rated films of the past 7 years. This was much more entertaining, but truthfully, it is a different kind of movie, I'd compare it more to The Royal Tennabaums. I wouldn't say this was better than that film, but it was certainly more realistic. Either were better than Little Miss Sunshine, which, like the above poster noted, was average.

Merry Christmas.

A man or woman after my own heart. I saw it, found it rather insipid, heavy-handed, and boring.

Maybe I'll like Eulogy. Of course, I didn't like Royal T, either.

reply

Yeah, Little Miss Sunshine standing at 8 is way overrated...Eulogy at least isn't over hyped and rated just about right.

I enjoyed Little Miss Sunshine; but I just saw it for the first time a week ago, so I missed the hype. (I refused to watch Napoleon Dynamite for two years after it came out because my friends kept quoting it. When I finally saw it, I found it amusing but pointless.) Anyway, all this "overrated" nonsense can shut it, cuz this could have been rated more over than so... if that makes sense. Juno is far more overrated than Little Miss Sunshine, and more recently, Benjamin Button being nominated for Best Screenplay is like awarding Paris Hilton best... anything. It's a travesty.

Anyway, I definitely side with you. Get new friends.

I like 'Eulogy' better.

Actually this has a lot in common with Rocket Gibraltar. Even the 'viking' funeral. Though that movie is much more drama. And the twins here blow Macaulay Culkin away.

LMS was kind cool, for a low budget movie.. I LOVED Eulogy though - had me in stitches!!! I love Tenenbaums too :)

reply

I loved both movies, but I prefer LMS. I love these kinds of movies though, dysfunctional families, screwed up people, etc, and usually rate them higher than most movies. I don't know how accurate the statement 'a comedy can't also be a drama' is, I for one disagree wholeheartedly. It's practically my favourite combined genre.

"A comedy can't be a drama as well." might be one of the most ignorant things I've read on this site (and there's been many.) Tell your friends to open their minds and get it together.
