'Shocking scene'

I thought this was a nice little movie about people living in faith until this scene. It gets pretty silly at this point. But you have to admit, the scene is in the Book of Mormon, so maybe Rogers felt that to be true to it, he had to include it.

It looks like vol. 2 may have been cancelled. There's no IMDb page for it anymore. That's too bad. I was really looking forward to seeing it.

I do think another problem with vol. 1 is that the characters are pretty one-dimensional. Nephi and Lehi are good, Laman is bad. There's very little "texture" to their characters, if that's the right term. The only partial exception is when Nephi initially refuses to kill Laban. But then, once again, maybe that's the way the characters have to be because they're that way in the Book of Mormon.

I didn't find anything particularly wrong with the acting. The people acted like they would if they were real. I've met people who "act" like Laman.

Actually, I don't think there's anything wrong with the acting, either. In fact, I think Mark Gollaher, the man who plays Laman, is the best actor in the film. But I just think the roles they have to play get pretty unbelievable after awhile. Somehow it really goes downhill for me in that shocking scene.

I didn't like the shocking scene either, but how should it be done? How did it look when the event happened?

Miguelus_Maximus,
I have to admit I can't really give you a good answer on that. To be honest, I am a skeptic about the Book of Mormon. But maybe someone else on these boards can suggest another way the scene could've been done. I'll be interested in any suggestions about that. Maybe if it was presented differently, it would be more believable.

As I said, I did like the movie until that point, and I was looking forward to v. 2.

Could you imagine how difficult the Book of Ether would be? It's got a number of technical difficulties involved in it.

I agree, the baddies could have been more multi-dimensional. One Laman's main complaints is that he is the older brother, and so being dispossessed. This is actually touched upon in the Book of Mormon.

reply

It's a bit more than touched, lol, I'd say. It's the reason the lamanites give for going to war against their brethren, the nephites.

reply

Well, I guess you mean in 1 Nephi. I thought it was in the movie tho. Hm, maybe not then.

reply

Regarding the shocking scene... there's much worse in Tarantino etc. Have you seen Inglorious B*sterds? Hmm...

It's not "sci-fi", it's SF!

Is it just me or did no one on here mention what "the shocking scene" was?

reply

I'm guessing it's the decapitation.
