BBC Cancels Popetown on BBC3

It's been axed because it would offend catholics. Apparently.

It will probably go on sale and onto DVD/video though. Woohoo!

The BBC can really be a bunch of knobs at times.

They shouldn't have to cancel a series because it may offend catholics, or any one else for that matter.

With a bit of luck, BBC will sell it to another channel who will have some bollocks and screen it. To make things even better, I hope they do & it turns out to be massive!

I'm often offended by the news, as I am regularly classed as a Binge Drinker, because i drink more than 10 pints of beer in a week. I am refered to (indirectly) as a boy racer, because I drive a high powered car at the speed limit rather than 10mph below.

So I trust the BBC will take heed of this note... And axe the news from there schedules too.

If Catholics are going to be offended by it then the solution is easy - don't watch it! Catholics wouldn't have liked Father Ted either - imagine if Channel 4 bottled it and we never got to see this gem???

I'm Catholic and I love Father Ted. Sure, I think it's a bit offensive to have a drunk priest, but I just laughed it off. I'm sure there are alcoholic priests or former alcoholic priests somewhere out there. We're human. However, I just didn't take that too seriously - it was a comedy.

Also, I loved Ardal's character - naive priest.

God Bless the man who played Father Ted (passed on a few years ago).

I've never heard of Popetown. Is it anything like Father Ted (wasn't very offensive - showed a lot of good done by priests in my opinion). However, I AM getting sick of all the anti-Catholic bigotry. Well, I'm more traditional anyway.

Just my opinion.

I'm Catholic too but I'm more peed off at the thought of the BBC making this show (which has many great stars) then bottling out, bascially a waste of money for the British licence payer. I agree with you guys...look at father ted....It's hilarious! And its funnier when you're catholic cause of all the 'inside' jokes.

Look at that episode of Time Gentlemen, Please when he is griefing the Catholics ('Cath-oholic They're addicted!')

Look at Family Guy in the US, thats probably one of the edigest shows on TV (and makes tons of Catholic jokes...as well as practically everyone else!) and has recently achieved ratings of 10-12million for the first two new episodes.

I know they were concerned about the actual pope's health so it was probably good of them to hold back screening but come on BBC......I don't want any more rubbish reality shows or soaps...I want cool, edgy, quality (and funny!) comedy

reply

I am a Catholic, and I'm from NZ. Our music channel, C4 has bought it, and so it will be airing for the first time in the world soon. the ads look hilarious

reply

Well it premiered last night, and I thought it was amusing, but not that offensive. Sure they had slaves making communion wafers, and the cardinals coming up with ways to make more money then Oprah, but otherwise it was just a good laugh.

Sure uptight idiots won't like it, but it was a good send up of the Catholic faith

reply

The show has done nothing to harm the image of the Pope, or the Catholic faith.

What HAS done damage to the image of Catholics is the absurd objections Catholics made BEFORE ever seeing the show.

Dopes - should have just kept their mouths shut. All they've done is increase awareness of the show - free publicity!

The cable channel Comedy Channel in Australia has bought the rights to "Popetown"

I think the bbc probably cancelled it because it is so lame, rather than because it would offend catholics. They obviously used that as an excuse to cancel it, because it will encourage people to buy the dvd. That way they will recoup some of the losses they will have incurred in funding the program.

Personally I cant believe it got further than the storyboarding stage.

reply

You are probably right, but this show is probably a right wing conspiracy to create ofensive material for catholics then scapegoat the liberals. So catholcis will force to vote on right wing parties.

Banter as much as you can about catholics, they will try to ignore you, but..

One thing really p1ss3s me of is that when they created a "controversial" or extreme portrayal about christianity, they call that freedom of speech. If mel Gibson makes Passion of Christ they call it a bigot, anti-semite...etc. BTW im not a hardcore religious here and prayers makes me impatient.

I thought some of these big mouthed liberals are smart (sic), oh wait open minded (sic) lol, please stop giving Bush a favore and wake up! A lot of people are being lured by scumbags (like nazis and right wingers) because of your EGO and your stupidity.

That idiotic director who made dogville is just one fine example of egomaniac that rivals the arrogance of American GOP Republcian party.

For meant time im gonna steal and burn some che guevatrra's T-shirt in front of Cuban embassy lol makes me feel better.

I reckon if you've got the bottle to make fun of the catholic faith you should do the exact same for the masons, the orange order, the jews, the hindi and the musilims. Yet no one has. Hell, I don't discriminate I will write parodies and take the piss out of anyone (sorry, write satire) for free. Whether you agree with it or not somebody somewhere will find it funny yet there was no plans to make satire about any of the above

reply

im catholic, and i *beep* love anything that takes the piss out of any reliigon includeing my own, if ya dont like it look away its not hard to do ffs

This show reminds me of Nazi propaganda films against the Jews, which were meant to demonize and make fun of the Jews based on stereotypes and fallacies about them. What gets me is that since it's about the Catholics there's nothing wrong with it, and that fans of the show claim that the Catholics are being uptight about it when they have every right to be offended. I'd like to see the reaction MTV gets for producing a show that parodies Islam or Judaism.

Sure, if Catholics don't like Popetown they don't have to watch it. I'm sure Jews in Hitler's Germany didn't have to watch "The Eternal Jew" either, but that didn't stop the Holocaust from happening.

reply

Since MTV in Germany has decided to show this, I was wondering would they show it if it was about a Jewish Rabbi and what he gets up to in the synagogue, or would we hear people crying 'anti-semitism'?

'If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.'
