Deadwood and learning lines....

Actor Stephen Tobolowsky

On “Deadwood,” it was a foregone conclusion we wouldn’t be able to learn our lines. Ian McShane told me to keep looking at him, stay in character, and just call out “Line.” The script supervisor would feed us the next adverbial clause. In the end, the scene turned out to be a standoff of two actors saying “Line.” They cut it together and it looked great.

Ha, ya apparently Milch had a thing for last minute script rewrites, the actors were constantly trying to keep up with the latest changes but many of them loved the challenge and look back fondly on their time with the show.

This is basically what Olyphant and McShane said during one of their DVD commentaries. TO said in the beginning he memorized all his lines and then learned quickly that was a waste of time, since Milch rewrote so much of it on the spot. They joked how they were expecting to just wear earpieces eventually so Milch could just feed them the lines as he made them up while filming.
