DEADWOOD MOVIE CONFIRMED!!!
South Dakota started 2016 in the Hollywood spotlight with "The Revenant"—a movie chronicling the grisly (and grizzly) life of frontiersman Hugh Glass—and, if rumors are true, the spotlight could soon shift to Deadwood.
HBO spokeswoman Mara Mikialian has confirmed that discussions are underway for a feature-length reboot of the popular "Deadwood" series.
The rumors began last fall, but re-emerged with new vigor last week when HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said he had given 'Deadwood' creator David Milch the go-ahead for a movie, TV Line reported.
"We're very, very optimistic that it's going to happen," said Lee Harstad, director of the Deadwood Chamber and Visitors Bureau. "And we're very encouraged by the news."
The original series ran on HBO from 2004 to 2006, and in many ways, it put the historic gambling town on the map. In the first year of the 'Deadwood' series, the town had to revamp its website to keep up with traffic demands.
And fans weren't just visiting Deadwood online.
"There was definitely a recorded economic boon when the series aired," Harstad said.
Harstad hopes a 'Deadwood' movie would revive fan excitement and bring more visitors to the real-life town. After the series ran, the town built a facade modeled after the show's set, and several wardrobe items from the show are on display throughout Deadwood.
"The people that love the 'Deadwood' series really, really love it ... and they're very big supporters of the community of Deadwood, so this is exciting news," Harstad said.
