in the featurette from the film's dvd, the director states in no uncertain terms that it is about the relationship between the 2 women.
one should have no doubts but that by the end of it their is a romantic relationship between them, however variable the intensity from one to the other (and, it's a french saying that "in love, one of the people involved always loves more than the other). the "twist" - which i didn't see coming - only confirms that. i also have no doubts but that they made love in the hotel room the last time we see them together.
i'm a big beart fan, as well as an ardant fan since the 90s.
and, depardieu holds up his end well in basically a "prop" role.

Béart and Catherine Deneuve, Stéphane Audran plus several other grande dames such as Fanny Ardant are the reason why I HATE Québecois Français accent.
