Hey, I liked it.

I wasn't expecting too much, but I think this was a good and well-made movie. A 5.8 rating just seems highly unfair. It in the very least should be in the 6's.

Meh, it was an OK ghost story, but feels familiar.... Like I've seen it before; Twlight Zone/Outer Limits/Thriller type story.

I do believe making Doug [& eventually Ryan] a serial killer was a bit of a cop out [pun intended for Ryan] and Miranda completely clueless if she had no idea.... why not have Miranda possessed by a Rachel as a psychotic female serial killer ghost who felt "wronged" by Doug as he was trying to cure her? But then it wouldn't fit the feminist/happy ending agenda of the film for Berry's Miranda.

And the movies very end scene setting up for a sequel Gothika II: Ghost Huntress was cheesy like Cheez Whiz 

And as usual Tony Stark was a complete failure 

Nah, I wouldn't really say the ending sets up for a sequel. It's typical for many horror movies to have one final scare before it's over. Especially if it's a happy ending.
I like the ending and I think the music playing perfectly matched how she feel she will never really feel at peace.

I love this movie, and I agree its rating is completely unfair. A lot of people's complaints seem to be that:

a) the plot was too unrealistic
b) the ending too predictable

As to the first, its a horror film. Horror films, particularly supernatural ones, are very rarely grounded in firm logic. Like with any movie you watch, there has to be some kind of suspension of disbelief. Is it unrealistic that a psychiatrist would end up in her own institution as a patient? Probably. But not once in watching this film has that ever detracted from its scares / story. Plus, they do explain at some point how they've managed to wangle her staying there. If you're going to go down that road you may as well say its unrealistic Halle Berry would prefer Charles Dutton over Robert Downey, Jr. But she does and you get over it. I think the story and setting are brilliant in that any kind of 'holes' that appear aren't strong enough to leave you feeling unsatisfied.

I guess your views on the ending depend on a lot of things. I first watched this in 2003 when I was around 8/9 and the twist was a complete shock. I watched it with a friend who is 22 only a few weeks ago and the ending caught her by surprise. Its not impossible to put 2 and 2 together, but I don't think it is made obvious at all. To me, when the twist comes, its disturbing.

I love horror films, but even now I think Gothika is probably one of the most atmospheric I've seen. Kassovitz did a damn good job in the sense its one of those movies where everything, even the music, seemed like the perfect choice.

I liked it too.

It's not great but it is worthy of a higher overall score than 58. it seems to me that there's a lot of really shoddy stuff out in more recent years that get far higher ratings yet aren't anywhere near as good as this.

Sorry - 5.8, not 58

Just saw it for the first time, the past Saturday (the 17th), and I liked it as well. But then, I'm not one who compares any movie to another, unless it's a remake of previous movie/teevee series. Or comic-book adaptions.

But this doesn't fall into any of those categories, so I just enjoy it for what it is, and decide if I like it based on it's own merits, again without comparing it to other movies I've seen.
