I agree with you. She was really selfish when it came to little Ruth... not only does the mother abandon Ruth (the little girl) at the end but she takes all the photos too! That part really bugged me.

I think that she took the pictures because she didn't want Ruth to live in the shadow of the stories of her two brothers. Ruth lived her entire life just hearing and telling the stories of those photographs over and over again. At the end, because most of the pictures are gone, she is making her own memories when she's out gardening.

Exactly right. The family needed to move on into the future. That doesn't mean completely forget about the sons. Certainly, a few photos of them in various places around the home would be appropriate, but the shrine was not a healthy outlet.

Also note that the one photo that Ruth was left with was of her mother. Only the boys feet are visible, which is symbolic in of itself.
