I'm guessing you just watched this on Film 4 like me!
The boy drowned whilst he was in the water looking for fish. The mum just watched like in a daze and only snapped out of it once the teacher was in the water trying to save him.
I think she had some kind of mental breakdown that severely detached herself from the situation. I could be wrong though.
A similar thing happened to me at the same point in the film. The only difference is, I was out of the room expelling from my body a cup of tea I had consumed earlier. I was taking a piss.
shareMy interpretation was that she unconsciously blamed her child for keeping her from the man she loved.

Actually, another poster said that in the book it explains that she was hallucinating that it was her lover drowning & she passively thought that this would resolve her dilemma -- she didn't realize that it was in fact her son who had drowned until she was in the hospital.
