Why I Might Withold Tips

IMO, a tip is for going above and beyond your actual duties. That said, I do tip because I understand that a servers hourly wage is below that of minimum wage and if they're at least attentive, I do tip, usually at 20%. However, I ran into a situation this past weekend that nearly made me withhold a tip altogether. The family and I(me, wif, 3 year old daughter, and my in-laws) stopped for lunch at this cafe at a resort on Skyline Drive in Virginia. First off, we had to wait for a table, not because it was prime time lunch time(it was about 2:30pm) but the place was crowded which is no one's fault. We finally sat down at 3pm. Our waiter took our orders at 3:05pm. By that the time the crowd had thinned a bit. There were stragglers watching the football games on TV(it was a Sunday). We were sitting there talking and watching the game when we all realized that our food was taking a pretty long time coming out. It was 40 minutes after we ordered and not only had we not gotten our food, our waiter never stopped by to either apologize for the delay or to simply see if we were OK. Now, it isn't like we ordered Chateaubriand or anything like that. It was 2 hamburgers, 1 pulled pork sandwich, an order of wings, and a grilled cheese for my daughter. by 3:50, I was ready to leave. Our meals finally hit the table at 3:55pm. 50 minutes after ordering. My food was cold and my daughter's grilled cheese wasn't even fully cooked. The bread looked like they dragged a match over it. We were all famished by that time and had no choice but to eat. The entire meal was $75 and change(you read that right for bar food). I was content at leaving $80. My FIL made the comment about leaving only a $3 tip to which I replied, "he will be lucky to get that". I mean, really? I'm destroying this place on Yelp because of this. I'm not one of those to call for a manager but believed I would have been justified if I did. The reason why I blame our server is because of the cold food. His excuse was that they had to wait for the burgers because they were ordered well done. Now, I've grilled my share of burgers and can tell you that to make a well done 1/4 lb. burger might take you 15 minutes TOPS, not nearly an hour. So, to all of you snooty servers out there. Please tell me why this person deserved any tip at all let alone the $14 we ended up leaving him.

Yeah, that sounds horrible but you also sound like someone who almost looks for anything to withhold a tip. What does "you snooty servers"even mean? Sounds like you have a personal agenda.
