what happened to Brandon Routh ??

where is he ??

reply

He does not return.

Superman curse. Like Christopher Reeve, his career will never reach the mainstream heights like it did with Superman Returns.

reply

He's playing the guy with the super suit in "Legends of Tomorrow," a role that he started playing a couple years ago on "Arrow."

reply

He's where he belongs. In a tv show. I mean the guy should be a doctor on a soap opera. He's lucky to have Legends. I have no idea how he sweet talked himself into the role of Superman.

reply

Really? Because this movie blows away "Man of Steel."

reply

I enjoy this movie. I just don't think Routh is an A-List caliber movie star.

reply

He definitely isn't. He could be doing better though.

reply

I think his boyish good looks might actually be getting in the way. As he matures into an older man, I bet he gets better roles.

reply

Yeah, Henry Cavill made for the best Superman, at least as far as looks go. I just found the second half of "Man of Steel" dull as it focused on super-powered beings pounding each other into walls/buildings/whatever. I love action as much as the next guy (e.g. "Terminator 2"), but there's got to be some character/thematic depth to hook the viewer or all the "exciting" things going on get dull real fast.

I wonder if Brandon Routh's issue if you want to call it that, was that he was quite deliberately meant to be a place holder for Christopher Reeve. In other words, he was ask to do an impersonation instead of being his own man so to speak.

reply

I think you might be right about that.

reply

I agree completely. Superman Returns was a much better film. Not as much fighting, which seems to be what fans were looking for, I guess? The fighting in MoS was really boring. Except the female Kryptonian.

I think Routh's problem (and even more Kate Bosworth) is that they felt like young kids playing grown up parts in that Superman movie. Spacey as Luthor however was aces. Anyone else think Superman as a film character is basically scorched earth now? Routh's movie was the best since about 1981, but it wasn't really the hit the studio wanted. What's odd is that it made more worldwide than the previous year's Batman Begins, but it didn't really set anything else up the way Begins brought back the Joker at the very end.

I think that is the dilemma with Superman. He's too known in pop culture to really reinvent. With Batman you can go grim and gritty, you can go light and silly like Adam West, but Superman isn't really that sort of deal. Aquaman can be given a modern spin and make a ton of money. Wonder Woman hadn't had decades of lousy movies to sour the public. Maybe if Routh had been allowed to play Clark Kent the way he does Ray Palmer on Legends of Tomorrow it could have worked better. The Atom seems more like Christopher Reeve Superman than the recent Superman portrayals.

The only thing I’ve seen him in since Superman was Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

reply

Well you'll be happy to hear a few years ago he starred in the greatest Hallmark Channel Christmas movie of all time, The Nine Lives of Christmas. He played a committed bachelor firefighter who's heart is softened by a homeless cat and a pretty veterinary student.

reply

Loved that movie and loved all the little Superman nods they slipped in

reply

The you need to be watching the Arrowverse TV shows.

He had a small role in Scott Pilgrim vs the World and he's actually kind of hilarious. It's not a lot of screen time, but he does a great job with what he's given.
