Main character Ray ( boy ) voiced by a girl

Just watched this in Roppongi Hills. Now this continues to baffle me : Why would they use a girl to voice the main character, who is a guy ? Plain wierd. I must say though she did a great job mimicking a guy's voice.

Not that I have any problems with Anne Suzuki, who is also in Shunji Iwai's Hana and Alice, but I just don't understand how the decision was made.

I think it happens frequently in anime.
when the main character is a child then a women's voice sounds maybe more realistic than a japanese man's voice..
Ray's voice sounded like a young boy's voice to me.

This is not uncommon in anime and animation.Nancy Cartwright has been the voice of Bart Simpson for 14 years.Anne Suzuki(a thirteen year old voice actress) would be a natural to to do an early adolescent boy. The problem is that 13 year old boys have unstable voices that can break making continuity problems if new dialog is needed later on.My understanding is that in two years they will do a sequel called"Steamgirl" So in two years they know Anne's voice will be the same and she can continue to do the voice of Ray Steam or should I say James Ray Suchima. The verbal pun of his name was intended.
