Some Things

1. The Steam family seems relatively well off. They have a rather large house in what appears to be an upper-middle class section of Manchester. So why does Ray have to work at that textile mill (or whatever it was) like a lower class child?

2. A lot of the characters disappear after the mono-wheel chase scene. Why waste time developing the big mustached foreman at the mill, the paperboy, Ray's mother, his friend staying over and her brother, etc. when they're just going to disappear as soon as Ray meets Stevenson aboard the train? I feel like the movie should've waited a little while before going to London and spent more time with the characters in Manchester.

3. Where did Scarlett's dog Columbus go to? I hope he wasn't still in the Steam Castle when it blew up.

4. When Lloyd is telling Ray that his father is dead... he says "my son" and "your father," but never addresses the mother with "your husband." In fact the mother's grief is glossed over pretty quickly, the dramatic shot of her digesting what her father-in-law just told her is the setup to a joke when she's knocked aside by Alfred. And when Ray is reunited with Edward in the Steam Castle, the mother, Edward's wife, never comes up that I remember. The entire familial dilemma that develops revolves solely around son, father and grandfather. The mother who has only Stevenson's vague reassurances her only child is still alive, and thinks her husband is dead, never merits a mention.

5. Ray's moralizing when he takes away the Steam Ball makes no sense in context, or in timing. In context, yeah, Stevenson is a hypocrite, but he and the British admiralty have the moral high ground since they didn't unleash their own weapons until after the Foundation did. And then there's the timing. Ray takes the Steam Ball away when the authorities need its power the most. I don't care if he is the son and grandson of the guys who invented the thing, how dare he hamstring the authorities in this manner because of his own self-righteousness? Jesus, can he wait to get on his high horse and condemn the bastards when there isn't a huge battle with the fate of London at stake happening?

6. What was Alfred still doing in the Steam Castle? Yeah, the fight with the claw machine was cool and all, but at this point, everyone has already left and the place has crashed and is going to explode. He has zero motivation to remain behind at the controls of the claw machine just hoping Ray comes along. What's even his motivation? By attacking Ray, all he's doing is preventing him from moving the Steam Castle. Just he just really want to kill Ray very badly? Why?

"I mean, really, how many times will you look under Jabba's manboobs?"
