what is this?

anybody have any info?

It's a serial project on http://www.davidlynch.com, and you have to have a paid membership to view it. There are currently eight installments. It's bizarre, disjointed. The dialogue seems to have been cut up and pieced back together. Everyone is wearing rabbit heads. The episodes move kind of slowly, but that seems to be integral to the mood he's attempting to establish. The eerie use of laugh track gives it self-awareness - we are watching something on a screen. Very atmospheric piece, lots of shadows and strange whispering noises, rainfall. I enjoy it, but that's probably because I'm not really trying to make too terribly much sense out of it.

No. Lynch is planning to release his website work but only on DVD and only through his website (which means high DVD prices and high P&P charges). You really should join the website which costs $10 a month... Although that sounds bad what you get for your money is: 8 episodes of Rabbits; 12 animated episodes of Dumbland (a crude and rude series about a violent sociopath); the complete cartoon strip series of The Angriest Dog in the World; tasters of his music (two pieces have videos accompanying them); his short Darkened Room as a hidden extra (though it's not that well hidden); many, many experiments (12 I think); various chances to actually chat with David himself in the chatroom; a realtime bird viewer; and a whole bunch of other stuff I'll have forgotten. For my money that's an absolute bargain and if you don't like it, then you can just cancel after one month.

Or THEN, you can live outside USA in a country where it's damn difficult to get a VISA before you're a working person with steady income and be bitter!

Wow, I wish I could make confusing "art" so people can pay money to try and understand me and my utter genius.

Ahhh, you understand it then. Do explain it for us.

No, I don't understand it, but ridiculing it because I don't would be stupid.

I've seen the first seven episodes.

First thing that came to mind was Eraserhead. Very atmospheric. I especially like the sound of the train horn in the backgrond. The room felt spooky with the lighting. I was waiting for the camera shot to change to a close-up of one of the Rabbits, but it never happened. I reckon I would've been *beep* scared if it did.

It seems like a parody of some 50's American sitcom. With the audience laughing at inappropiate moments. I too agree that the dialogue has been cut up and placed in a random order. I wonder if you wrote down everything that each character spoke and rearranged it you could make a proper conversation out of it?

What made me laugh was when everytime the male Rabbit came through the door the audience would applaud, and the way he would walk over to the sofa in the same manner.

The bit I didn't enjoy was when there was only one rabbit in the room, and the matchstick lights up above. A bit boring those episodes as they were too silly.

All in all, enjoyable, in a strange way. I wonder if anybody has asked Lynch what the hell this is supposed to be about?

reply

After watching Inland Empire I got the script online, cut out the Rabbit parts and tried rearranging the dialogue. There really isn't more sense to it. Whatever order you choose, it's pretty random except for a few lines having to do with time, weather etc.. If you to do this and expect some kind of 'answer', you won't get it.

We've met before, haven't we?

I'd like to respond on that. I don't claim that I understand Lynch, but I'm a fan, and even I think that the site is too expensive. Not only the members fee, but also the autographed inkjet pictures, just $489,- c'mon you must think very highly of yourself to alk that for a picture... But on the other hand, it's his site and he can ask whatever he wants, I don't have to give it.

I guess you know a great number of confuser-artists...
if it were so simple, as you state, the world were full of persons making tons of bucks out of plagiarizing people by means of confusing art. And in fact it isn't so simple, and Lynch is an exception that confirms the norm I'm talking of: he produces by himself his projects or finds the money he needs everywhere except in the mainstream Hollywood.

A different aspect is popularity, and the money one gets from it. That is a matter of a more or less intelligent (and good-tasted, if one cares about it) strategy directed to selling themselves to the public, by means of advertisement (and in this topic, a director like Kubrick was a teacher to everybody...). It is a job, and one worries also about earning a living, you know... and anyway, this is something apart from the more or less artistic outcome of the work one, like Lynch, does.

You should rather be fascinated that hundred of thousands of fools crowd cinemas to watch sillyness like 's.w.a.t.'... an advice I feel like giving is to learn to make that kind of stuff, if you want to make money.

Everyone has their predilections as well as opinions. And I can see there are many proclaimed artists out there that are a sham. Whether they know it or not, sometimes some of these people seem like they're trying to be as bizarre and off-beat as they possibly can. However, to the keen eye & ear, these people are fairly easy to pick out as their work doesn't go beyond much of what you really see, rather these failed 'confusing artists' seem to follow a formula of 2 + 2 = 4.

Someone like Lynch among others is different and needless to say rare. He bases much of his art on dreams and is heavily involved in everything he does and every aspect. With Lynch you don't just have the surface, but you have much underlying it. Various elements within his features and featurettes work together, they use much film rhetoric, etc. People can speculate on this type of work for endless amounts of time, and you'll always find something new.

I wouldn't be offended by someone thinking Lynch is part of the former, for all I know they have a very valid opinion (who knows, maybe it's the fan-base they might not like over the director, I myself am not too crazy about some of them I've known). Nor would I ever attack someone for liking an all-action type of movie like SWAT. If that's what someone likes, good for them, I don't and I don't understand it (for the most part) like they don't understand someone like Lynch or his works. Peace.

I've got to see this, I guess I'll suck it up and pay the 10 a month. My buddy has a membership and says he chats with Mr. Lynch all the time, I wonder what I'd say to the man...

first off-
let me say I'm a HUGE Lynch fan- and I needed to buy Rabbits/Darkened Room off of SHF to complete my collection- and I'll be sure to buy it again when Lynch officially releases it- merely because I love the man and I am a collector- now- let me say- Rabbits is complete trash. At it's best it is really bad student film. It is pretentious- weird for weird's sake (and I RARELY say that about Lynch- my favorite director)- and isn't creepy or interesting in the least. To sum the entire thing up- a family of sorts in bunny costumes do mundane things around a house- they talk to each other out of sequence so that questions and answers do not link up- there is a laugh track which only makes the whole thing more a lame attempt at surrealism- and each rabbit has his or her own soliloquy of sorts- really bad singing or lousy poetry which is supposed to make you think there is some huge mystery taking place. Aside from that there are lame special effects like a giant flaming match head which appears during the soliloquys and some mumbling floating face that appears when one of the rabbits walks forward with two flashlights. There is only one brief change of camera shot- and that is of a telephone that is ringing- something that is meant to be ultra creepy happens at the end when a the door opens by itself and a scream is heard along with flashing lights- the soundtrack is made up of odd atmospheric noises like rain and shuffling sounds... believe me- it may sound cool- it may sound interesting- actually I know it does because I bought it thinking the same- but it is altogether ten times more grueling to watch than "The Amputee" on the short films disc... If you're a collector like myself then hunt it down- but if you have all the Lynch films and are looking for something extra then hunt down The Industrial Symphony Number 1 bootleg DVD on EBay- Lynch's live performance piece with Angelo Badalamenti (probably spelled that wrong) which is brilliant, beautiful, breathtaking and astonishing... Also get the Short Films disc which is amazing except for The Amputee- I'm not trashing Lynch here- I'm a serious fan- I just don't want anybody to pay for the Lynch website thinking that they're gonna get their money's worth with Rabbits- because they're not. Join for another reason- like giving the guy money to finance another film or to put the finishing touches on Inland Empire. Sorry David- but Rabbits is awful.
