Should have been at the Oscars

Bollywood was going down the drain when this movie came up. I was just enthralled. It's hard to find a movie that is so neutral about the indo-pak split up and the actors and actresses were simply phenomenal. I mean Urmila is just marvellous and Manoj is terrific. Everyone esle was perfect as well. I was fully satisfied with the movie- the songs, the ending...everything. it should have been sent for the oscars and i'm sure it wud have won. I really don't trust any of the bollywood award ceremonies. This was the best movie of the year and it got nothing...how disappointing...

My mom told me that Manoj Bajpai was nominated in the supporting actor category. He told the jury to take a hike.

I don't need award ceremony to tell me he is the best actor in India. He is also an actor who makes good choices picking roles and portraying a character. Some stars get worshipped for playing the same characters with the same mannerisms, movie after movie. Bajpai deserves credit for not stooping to the level where he recycles his last role.

I saw this yesterday after missing it on theatres. Its a brilliant take on the subject and I agree it deserved to be nominated to the Oscars.

"Should have been at the Oscars" damn right! This is one of the few truly good items bollywood puts out, but it didn't get enough attention as it did not feature any big bollywood stars.

We don't need no Oscars to prove that we make good films (well, some like this one anyway)!

Actually it might have stood a chance at the Oscars if only India had selected it as its official entry. It had a strong story and is set against a historical background and it also had the Bollywood ingredients like the songs and dances (which are more colourful than in 'Lagaan' and more realistically placed here). But ignoring it is just one of the many mistakes India has made regarding cinema. Do you actually blame people who have little knowledge of Indian cinema to think that their films are the usual song and dance melodrama?
