this movie... arty or pretentious? *spoiler*

Don't get me wrong I thought this movie was a pretty awesome film, good characters and well thought out story. I just felt that sometimes it lost the plot a bit. The sex scenes seemed gratuitous, and the whole foursome thing at the end seemed out of place and contrived. What do you think? I'm not just slagging off the film because I do feel like it had so much potential. To me though, these scenes didn't connect with the rest of the story.

I really loved this film. A complex story but not really that hard to follow if you concentrate on the main issues being pressented-and there are many to consider, perhaps at times too many for some. I found the story thoroughly entertaining and more rewarding with each viewing. Yes, it's out on dvd in Oz. While there might not be a gigantic " climax" as in many hollywood blockbusters, I still found the journey very entertaining and the performances not overacted. This is definitely not the usual coming-of-age film, It takes risks which may not please some but it definitely pleased me.

Re DVD availability: can you let me know who's selling the DVD online? None of the usual Australian DVD outlets I buy from have it available, and one lists a March 23 (2006) release date. Is it only available for rental now? Any info would be greatly appreciated, as I'd love to see this film.

I saw the DevotedDvd listing but couldn't confirm it was this particular film (no details are given). Thanks for the additional info. :) Maybe if you could post when you receive the DVD that would ease my concerns once and for all...

reply

Yeh i took a risk , but hopefully it's the right film cuz it had the same date and it's an Austrailan DVD so it's most likely , but once i verify i will let you know.

reply

I didn't think it was for sale yet. You can only hire it in the video shops here, t think.

reply

Yeah, that's what I heard. It went to rental outlets Dec. 7 but won't be available for sale until next March. But if anyone proves me wrong or confirms buying a copy I'll be thrilled. :)

reply

This film as a whole made little sense to me. Why was she attracted to Hugo? Why did she leave with the kid? Nothing made sense. That is until I realized that it was written by a woman. :/

I feel like this film tried too hard to be artsy by the overuse of flashbacks. It would've made for a better story had they edited it better.

The one part that made sense was the only part that probably wasn't meant to make any sense. When Hugo screwed the little girl I was outraged. How could he sleep with his best friends' child? That to me was one of the most disgusting sex scenes in all of film--worse than rape, worse than regular pedophilia, worse than alien-human sex! But then of course when they showed the 4 person orgy it all made sense to me--they were in a 70's like era of free sex which IMO is how relationships should be like. Hugo was reliving his past by being free, not satisfying carnal desires to mate with a child.

Overall, it's a decent film. It puts an asian man in a good light relationship wise which is a view that the rest of the world is far ahead of the US in. I honestly would've liked to seen a film based on the four adults rather than this one based on the kid. Johnny and Jass's relationship ended in a tragedy and so did Jude and Alan's. It's too bad I didn't write this story.

An 18 year old is not a child, and can marry in most countries, including Australia. I have more of a problem with orgies personally than consensual sex between people with an age gap (which the film doesn't overly romanticize, BTW) but don't judge a film on the basis whether I personally approve of the choices its characters make. That's very childish and will severely limit your options as a filmgoer. Oh, and women often write fine screenplays. You shouldn't filter your analysis of any film through your own prejudices. It reflects poorly on you rather than the film.

reply

Yep, crowjane29 I totally agree:)
I saw the movie as I was I Australia and I really really liked it...now I'm desperate to get a copy!! I checked out the site you guys posted (dvddevoted etc.) but guess what? The only country they don't send movies to is the country where I live...I wonder why, I guess Italy still doesn't look civilized enough (even if, apparently, every other country does). Shame on me and on my country;)
I'll go and try to convince the dvddevoted people to send me a copy anyway...

reply

I don't think Italy is any less civilized than the rest of the world, certainly not less civilized than America. ;) I think DevotedDvD ships to countries with a stronger currency than the Australian dollar. Even I had trouble setting up an account with them (they didn't like my internet provider so I had to set up a separate email account at Google...) So I think they're a bit odd. There will be a more general release of the Peaches DVD in March, I've heard, so you'll probably have more options in buying it.

If you simply can't wait, you could have a friend in another country order you a copy and then ship it to you.

reply

I've been looking out to buy it as well. Looks like I'll have to wait till March to get my own copy. REALLY REALLY loved this film. It's the sort of film I'd like to watch on Saturday afternoons and just lie there and get caught up in Steph's world in Swan Reach.

reply

Yes, I guess I'll wait until March as well...And after that I'm definitely gonna enjoy my saturday afternoons;)
guys you know what? we should set an International Peaches Day, a day on which we all watch the movie..of course it'll be a sunny saturday afternoon;)
can't wait to get my copy!!

reply

Just got an ex-rental copy of Peaches at Blockbuster, Neutral Bay for $19-95. Just played it and there's nothing wrong with it. I think there might be another one for sale.

reply

"little girl", "child", "kid"?
Xanadu, wtf are you talking about?

reply

I stopped taking him seriously when he said he knew the film was bad because the script was written by a woman.

I've read whining about the age gap in Peaches before, but I find it mostly ignorant of what the film is trying to do. Sue Smith, the screenwriter, has said the affair between Steph and Alan is not meant to be exploitative or deviant in any way. She initiates it and both get something out of it. It isn't meant to be permanent or a solution to their problems. But most 18 year old women are sexually active, and can reasonably make the choice to have sex without being insultingly called "children". If the genders were reversed in the film, would there be the moralizing? I don't think so.

reply

Thoroughly agree. We should organise a special screening at a local cinema-e.g.Palace Norton Street on a Saturday arvo of course and then dinner at their superb Martini bar-great movie/picture deal! We could even send out written invitations to the cast and crew.

I really wanted to like it.
But I had a problem with the pace and tempo. It varied slow and slow-motion (with the inevitable piano-music) which made it draging.
Too many close-ups were used, so I lost interest towards the ending when it really mattered (in engaging to the characters).
