Should I see This movie

Ever Since I heard about this movie, I was interrested. And now here in New Zealand it's on DVD.

So I wondering is this movie worth seeing?

So Should I see this Movie?

reply

I don't think it's the best Ghibli film out there, but it's definitely entertaining and worth watching.

reply

Thanks for your opion dballred.

I might just see it.

I'd concur. Though probably not Ghibli's BEST film (I think that title goes to Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke), it was more of a 'feel-good' type of movie. I liked it though. The characters were wonderfully captivating. The only problem with it, I would say, was that it moves too fast...left me wanting a lot more.

reply

Yes... when it's over you will sit up wanting more.

But you'll probably do what I did and just watch it again!

reply

If you like Ghibli in general...you'll like this...simply put

Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.

This is a very warm and enjoyable movie, if you liked Totoro then you will probably like this film too but its a bit cuteys for some.

English Language Anime: Dub it, don't pervert it.

reply

i'd say skip it. I was so underwhelmed by this film. :/

Watch Totoro first!

reply

i watched whisper of the heart and it left me wanting more, the characters seem so real that u could relate to them and their situations, and the ending did come to me out of a sudden.. was hoping that the cat returns would continue upon mostly the same characters... looks like it doesnt..

reply

Watch it. "It's so cool!"

It's a lot of fluff and don't look for anything thoughtful. Just catch the humor of it.
It's a blast!

The one thing that actually knocked me out was the dubbing. It was actually quite good. You might want to watch both just to get a feeling for both sides, but the dubbing is stellar. Anne Hathaway has a voice for anime. She should do more. Cary Elwes? He's always good, no matter what he does.

If you like Ghibli films I would suggest watching this film. It is so light hearted and funny (in the Japanese with Subtitles) and I thouroughly love this film and have added it to my rotation of watching two ghibli films a month. I would say that its not on par with Mononoke Hime or Spirited away in terms of complexity of story and visuilized immagry but it is more on par with Totoro (his best film in my opinion) in its ability to make you wonder and believe that all is possable.

I would rank this film a 85/100 only because If I feel Totoro is a better film I can not give them close to the same ratings

Totoro - 100/100
Grave of the Fireflies - 98/100
Mononoke Hime - 96/100
Spirited Away 95/100
Kiki - 92/100
Only Yestarday 90/100
Porco - 88/100
Laputa - 87/100
Cat Returns - 85/100

All are A quality films but I have to give some oprder to the list so as not to give all films a 100/100 and screw things up.

Its like Kurosawa films... many are A quality but not all are worthy of 100/100

I can not do justice to Totoro. It would be like describing the Mona Lisa to a Blind man.

Two Sisters go to play in the forest when they move to the country because of their mothers medical condition. While there they meet the Tototo's.
(Oh Totoro, Chu Totoro, and Chibi Totoro.... there might be more but not in the movie). They have fun and play games and do stuff and you wish you were there too. Nothing Bad happens and Its wonderful. Good sountrack too!

1. Kiki's Delivery Service doesn't have a sequel. It should, though. Disney is making a live-action version of it. That might become something nice.
2. The movie you saw was "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind", and the name is actually based off of the princess who helped Odysseus in "The Odyssey", so I guess the name is Greek or something. It was made in 1984, exactly.
3. Totoro is the giant round fuzzy guy in Studio Ghibli's blue logo at the beginning of all of their movies. The movie is spectacular and is a classic in Japan. I can't really explain it without making it sound bad, which it's not, so I won't try to. You should definitely see it, though. Another good Ghibli film is "Whisper of the Heart".

Best thing ever.

Totoro sucked balls.

Yes its a great film! Its the best Studio Ghibli film ive seen after Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away. The story had more coherence and logic than the others but was still retains the bizarre and unique approach that you want from these type of films. It was also very funny.

Yes, I think you should see it. It isn't Studio Ghibli's best, but it is still beautiful and charming.
