Why not nearly as well-known as Spirited Away, Howl's, etc.?

I only found this movie when I was looking for pics of cats on Tumblr I think, and I liked the animation so I googled something about it and found this. I have never heard of it before, despite it being a Miyazaki film, and he's normally very famous, at least on the Internet.

Probably because it isn't a Miyazaki film, it's a Hiroyuki Morita/Aoi Hiragi film.

Oh! My bad. I could've sworn it said that on the DVD case.

That explains why it isn't as good and cast Anne in it. Miyazaki and his crew only write the best and pick the best for their casts.

It is what it is, Bone.

Neither Miyazaki nor the other Ghibli directors have anything to do with the English voice cast for any of their movies. And how is Anne's performance a problem anyway? It's not like the character was written or voiced any better in the Japanese version.

That said, I agree that Miyazaki's reduced involvement was probably the movie's biggest problem, which is supported by the fact that he did write the script for Whisper of the Heart (also adapted from a manga by Aoi Hiiragi).

Well, it's not as Miyazaki film, and it's nowhere near as good as his films, so I guess those would be the two reasons why. I don't know how it did at the box office, but that always plays a large part in international attention.
