Q. Tarantino Presents...... What does he have to do with this?

On the dvd cover and on the thrailer it says "Quintin Tarantino presents: Modesty Blaise" ore somthing.
I am a Tarantino fan and is often here to check up on his new projects but this film isn't mentioned.
Thats why i was shocked wen I saw the thrailer.

Do they actually use Q.T.'s name to promote this movie?
If I'm not totaly misslead this movie is made by Miramax who allso makes Tarantinos films.

If this is the deal it's a lousy way to sell films.

Im also wondering what connection Q. Tarantino has with this movie?

reply

it always says quentin tarrantino presents in front of a movie wich mirmax has made to make people go see it

reply

he wrote it

oh, you would be happy with 2 8ths instead of a quarter? Thats awfully big of you!

reply

No, no.. he did not write it. He passed the idea of making a modesty blaise movie to miramax. He just gave them the idea of adapting the comic and helped them find a director.

Miramax's first idea was to make a big budget movie, but Tarantino did'nt like the script, so that's way it came out two year later, and with a much smaller budget. He liked the script on this one and agreed to be a part of it.

that's right, tarantino loves modesty blaise. it's one of his favorite books i think. vincent vega reads it on the toilets in pulp fiction...

reply

I thought he helped co- write it cos i saw him listed as a writer of it on another website, but I guess it was wrong cos it don't say so on the imdb board.
I started reading Modesty Blaise after hearing about the books on the commentary of pulp fiction and i thought they sounded good. Although I love Tarantino films, it does seem he 'borrows' a lot of ideas, shown in other films that he gets inspiration from- but this was definately shown in blaise books- one in fact says, 'They did not speak of Tarrant, or of mysterious deaths, or of what was to come. At these times, waiting for a caper to begin, they spoke of ordinary things... of a play seen, a book read, a disc to be bought.'

As this is what Tarantino is well known for- criminals that talk of casual stuff, no wonder he loves the Modesty Blaise books so much!

I heard somewere that this movie was made so that Miramax could hold on to the movie rights.
Seing that the movie was rather bad this sounds logic to me.

It was allso made in the Balkan (east europe) and im guessing its a cheap place to make movis. Small price to pay to hang on to such a big name.

reply

That is correct, Miramax was about to loose the rights to the film because QT and others couldn't agree on what to film (or find the time to work on it) so he quickly approved this "introductory" script of the Modesty Blaise charactor and pushed for his friend, Scotty Spiegel, to direct it. The long term plans are to make a big budget version of a Modesty Blaise film. Anyone who sees this film on DVD should take the time to watch the extras, in this film they are actually pretty interesting.

Also, I wouldnt say that this was a bad movie, for a low-budget, mostly dialogue and setup flic, I thought it was interesting and well-made.

Tarantino has his name on this one because he's Produced 'From Dusk Til Dawn 2' and Scott Spiegel wrote the screenplay to that film.

This is my theory as to why he put his name on it.

"Presenter
AKA: Presents
A presenter is person (often famous or well respected) who introduces a movie or show on screen or via voice-over. Some films include a credit "Presented by", or "presents", which indicates the person is an executive producer as opposed to someone who appears in the film."

he exec produced the film, which means he bought into the film, he was the bank, the same with his name on "hostel", "iron monkey" and "switchblade sisters", he buys into the film and takes a percentage of the earnings and it return they get to put his well known name on the box, this has been done with "roger corman presents" etc etc etc

I just put Modesty Blaise on layby at Kmart. I also picked up From Dusk to Dawn. I haven't watched it yet. It seemed cool. I've never been into horror movies, but when I found out about it I got hooked. I own Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and both Kill BILL's. Both Reservoir Dog's and Pulp Fiction are special editions. I bought the 10th anniversary edition of Pulp Fiction and then bought a copy of it for my brother as a christmas present. Do you know how I could get hold of Jackie Brown for cheap? I've read Rum Punch and it is one of my favourite movies.

'presents...' means:

Tarantino liked the film or at least felt it neeeded more promotion or a wider viewing. (such as with Hero.)
He slapped his name on for one of both of those reasons.
Another could be because he is paid by miramax or because they produce his films and every director has to get on his knees for studio execs and Tarantino can be no different - no matter how 'untouchable' he may seem!

he did it with hostel too. its kind of a stamp of approval and he usually has some small role in the production or something..
