well buuh huuh, whine whine

Other girls always complain about girls who are skinny....this is either because they are chubby themselves or think that it's unfair female beauty ideals are invented by "dirty pigs" called men. Who invents the ideals on what men should look like? Love-hungry women of course. Besides, whats wrong with being skinny anyway? I'm skinny as hell, and if you came and told me I was too skinny, I'd probably want to smack you in the face.

Fair enough, I'll have to check it out again..

Yeah, Modesty is supposed to be curvacious and muscular, not skinny.

yder, what does it matter what he/she looks like? He/She's not the one who's going to/played Modesty. It's all about character fitting.

Or maybe she was just too skinny. There are way too many underweight and nasty bony women on TV. If you can't see it, you're blind.

reply

I agree too skinny. more muscular, she's supposed to be a skilled fighter.

Yeah nothing about stereotypes here, did anyone see the orginal comics? The name Modesty was supposed to be a joke, as the character was supposed to be anything but modest and definately more bulked out in a full female way, darn it I'll say it, Buxom, when buxom meant a full figured girl with a medium to large bust. The character was also supposed to be very intelligent and clever too.

The role should have been played by a possibly younger Kirsty Alley type, and who I think is way sexy, intelligent and smart before people start saying I'm age-ist, as well as sexist.

Remember the character was written before all this PC rubbish and men could actually freely enjoy real women!

I Know, I know, I'm going to have fifty billion 'sexist' remarks made about me now and how evil I am. If you do you've missed the point, I'm talking about a character who was a confident, intelligent and sexy, I bet skinny girls want to be that and that's a good role model.

I could go on, about our age, but I'm off to watch the film! Cheers!

Hey, I'm a skinny (or at least formerly skinny) woman and I agree that any Modesty should be slightly buffed, and definitely buxom with a nice set of hips to go with it.
Modestly Blaise defies traditional roles like "Whore" or "Madonna", the only two standard categories for women. She's both - and neither, a woman who plays (and plays well) in a man's world, but still retains an undeniable femininity.
Got to love her.
Got to worship her.
Got to hope someone, some day, makes a movie that does her justice.

P.S. I notice there's no Willie Garvin on the castlist - don't tell me they left him out! That's like leaving out her right arm...

Saw the movie for the first time on TV last night and thought it was much better than I had been led to expect. As far as being skinny goes, she had not been in Tangier for very long and had been starving when she arrived, so had not had time to fill out her curves.

reply

Come on people, in this film Modesty is 19!!! She has just crossed the desert alone, had a childhood of near starvation, wandering on foot and alone across Balkans and the Middle East!!! Yes, Alexanda Standen is painfully skinny, but good god people, is that not realistic for the story about Modesty's youth?! Size Zero debate doesn't have much to do with nomad orphan foundlings who have had to fight for everything. Besides, I thought her body had the perfect poise of a young panther, as she leaned over that roulette table.

Of course, in any later films the more mature, grown-up Modesty should NOT look like this (she's had nearly a decade to live well off her crime), and I am willing to listen to any complaints then if the actress seems as starved then...
But I do hope that Standen is in the picture then as her performance here is phenomenal. All she needs is some eyebrows and more carefully judged lipliner (god, WHO did her make up???). She can all already do what most Hollywood actresses can only dream of - convince us that even as an underdog she can win a game of wills with a single stare.

The anorexia (look, she is seriously underweight, not skinny) was ok for a half-starved kid, but not a healthy adult Modesty. The look of Modesty in the comics reflected the time period (60's upwards) but not necessarily today. With her skillset, a modern Modesty would be fit and trim, with an atheletic or dancer's frame. She doesn't have to be curvy, but should look healthy.

This film is set before Modesty meets Garvin, while she works in Tangiers, but ends with her taking over the gang to build the future Network.

I agree, I remember seeing her in this film and I was shocked at how skinny she is.

But I swear they did something to the camera lense - they seemed to 'extend' her and other characters, so they were out of proportion. Did anyone else notice?
