Do I need to be familiar w/ the story from the FOTR to play this?

I got the last 2 LOTR games in the bargain bin for .99 at Gamestop. When I was a teenager, I read the books (that was quite some time ago). I saw the films in the theatre but I don't really remember them in detail.

Do I need to see/play the Fellowship of the Ring film/game to really understand this one? I asked the clerk at the store and her response was, "well, they're like the movie" but that didn't really answer my question.

Not really. The game is based specifically off the first two films. It couldn't though in seeing the movies.
