My Review

Okay, I was bored and decided to see this movie. But I think the main thing that brought this movie down was that there would be a hour of footage, then basically that same hour repeated 4 times. It consists of 1. Gathering the troops and discussing the attack plan, 2. Flashbacks to the men's wives 3. The approach of the troops marching in a long line 4. Men running up hill and shooting, usually the first getting shot in the head then 3 other men rescuing him. 5. Defeat of the enemy and calling to base to tell of success 6. Men flashing back to wives and singing 10 minute songs. That was the basic movie, and that same order of events happened about 4 or 5 times. and every time it did a flashback to the wives, it would show the man, then his wife and him. There were about 10 men or more who would have a flashback so this took up tons of time. Other than that, the men couldn't kill their enemy except with either bayonets or grenades. I liked the music and there was a lot of action, though the action was repetitive. Overall, I probably wouldn't see it again, but it wasn't too horrible.

hehe that was nicely said, i hadn't thought of the movie that way as repeating the same thing over and over. and i agree, it did come off like that.
the film could have been organized a little better and communicated to the viewer through maps etc. where the soldiers were located and how the war strategy progressed.

Yeah. I agree with the map things...I had no clue where anyone was, or how far they were from other people, or where they were going.

Right they're making a war movie, so gathering the troops and and discussing the attack plan is quite pointless of course, there was absolutely no need for that.

If you've ever seen an Indian movie, EVER, then u'd know that no Indian movie is quite complete without the romantic angle. It's just an integral part of every Indian movie. But apparently, in your mind, the men's wives are inconsequential.

Approach of troops marching in a long line. You're right, they should jave just sent Rambo and The Terminator, no need for an entire platoon.

People getting shot in the head, they should have tried something original, like the the person in the middle getting shot, the whole "First guy getting shot" or "Last guy getting shot" has been done to death in Indian movies.

They should have again shown something original -- Distort History and said "Pakistan won and decided to give back the territory to India". I mean why show that they won, and even if they did, why bother calling the base? Oh wait, it's the army, there are rules to be followed in the army, yeah but still they shouldn't have done that

no one is saying that what happens in war is stupid. war like life is mundane. but this was a movie. i mean i have no problem with how they do things in war. i mean obviously there is a reason and obviously it works.

jp dutta didn't have to change those kinda things but maybe it would have been better if he had done a few stories instead of a dozen. there have been many war movies based on real events, they don't have this problem of repeating the same thing over and over.

also peoples wives and lives are not inconsequential as you've apparently interpreted our views as saying. but you have to agree that it was silly to have all the soldiers think of their loved ones in a row. i mean even a television documentary could have integrated things better than line of control did.

On the point that there were too many stories, u're right. There were just too many of them. However he was caught in an interesting dliemna, that being that if he left out a few people, then he would not be doing justice to those that did lay down their lives for the country, as if their lives were not important enough to get a mention.

I guess the only alternative, and it has been suggested before is a "Band of Brothers" kind of endeavor, but given the Indian audience, I'm not sure how successful that would have been, though Fauji did quite well.

As to all the soldiers thinking of their wives/girlfriends one after another, well if they kept doing that at odd moments in the movie, spread throughout, it would have broken the momentum of the movie.

there were many more soldiers that i'm sure weren't included in the film. actually there were few that the film itself mentioned in the beginning who also were given medals for their courage. i think it would have been well if he had removed a few other such people and mentioned them in the beginning to give them their due. you can never completely cover everybody, because its hard to compare the value of each soldier's sacrifice.

about the wives thing, i personally think it would have been more effective to show their stories more naturally. i mean the soldiers must be coming across some memory or something they said or a object that reminded them of their loved one, and at that point we could have heard their story. but i think i've said that already. i guess its just a matter of opinion so we'll leave that there.

aside from all my criticism and the criticism of others, i think most of us agree that it was great that jp dutta attempted such a story. i mean the research he did, and the money he put into this project is really something. and i do appreciate it very much. this kind of thing is not normal for indian movies so i will welcome it. but at the same time, i still reserve the right (as a movie fan) to view films and analyze them as films. so when i criticize the movie, i am not disrespecting any of the soldiers or what they went through.

in my opinion they should have told the story of kashmir from the beginning and stories from both sides might be quite long but 4 hours is enough.

could even do a trilogy type thing.

heres an idea for a finale: big fight going on explosions and stuff lots of killing like omaha beach in Saving Private Ryan BUT scene switchs between pak and indian sides AND pak fighters singing (mouthing) words to qawali music and indians singing (mouthing) words to bhangra or something !!!

real (movie) war + singing (mouthing/miming) war = TEH WIN

obviously indian army would be dancing while pak dudes would stand not coz they dont dance but because they are macho.

DARE i even suggest appear/disappear effect and change clothes 62894926846 times during this finale too (and maybe a slow mo run up through a field of flowers)
