Naina and Rohit's daughter--I'm a little confused

Did anyone else notice that Naina and Rohit's daughter at the very end of the movie looks awfully Caucasian? She doesn't look Indian at all, and I think she's even blonde. (And I really really don't mean to offend anyone in commenting on this; I don't mean to say that either is superior to the other!) Up until recently I always counted this as kind of an oddity and thought that maybe I was just crazy, but today someone proposed that perhaps this is supposed to suggest that the girl was adopted--and, taking it even further, that maybe Naina and Rohit don't ever consummate their marriage. Even she wasn't really convinced that this was the case, especially the last part, but I thought it was kind of an interesting theory. If you agree with me that the girl doesn't look Indian (she also has an American accent), do you think that it was just a random decision?

reply

yeah... i thought that was kinda weird too...

Yeah no, you're right in your points; as regards the accent I guess I was just thinking that Naina's younger siblings, for example, speak English in that special borderline-English accent that lots of Hindi-speakers have, and they were probably born in the US too...but maybe not. And her skin is really light, but it's true that Naina and Rohit are light too--her hair looks like it has kind of blonde highlights to me, but you could also say it was brown if you wanted to. So the only way I could be right on this, after all of that, would be if they were working on a really tight budget!, hahah--because I doubt that the kid was supposed to be adopted. And no, I'm not Indian; I'm American, and unfortunately in a much less interesting place than New York.

reply

What the hell... it's been a while since I saw KHNH, but didn't the kid have dark brown hair and a sort of coffee skin tone? She looked pretty Indian to me!

reply

uhhh, if you watch the movie, it is pretty obivous that the daughter is not indian . . . as much as indians can be light skinned and second generation kids dont have accents . . . this girl was clearly caucasian . . . if you look at any other indian movies, the indian kids are totally recognizable as being of Indian decent . . . directors and casting directors pick people out very specifically. Maybe not the staring roles, but the supporting castare picked based on the character they represent . . .

BUT - does anyoen know the song that was played on the CD player by Sweetu's mom when Rohit came over? The lyrics on my english subtitles said ' Come into my arms" . . .? Thanks

It's 'Baho mein chale aao' from Anamika (1973)

I think you are reading a little too much into it. I think she is meant to be indian and their daughter, Naina goes on about finding love with Rohit so i assume she has consumated their marriage. Their daughter is a second generation indian born and bought up in the US hence the accent, the hair was most defiently light browm/ honey, as someone has said before we know indians come in all shapes, colours and sizes so that is not odd.

'maybe it's because im a londoner'

Haha maybe it just kinda signified that Rohit was truly gay (happy, kantaben?), and naina didn't do anything for him in bed (if you know what I mean :P) and they had to adopt a daughter

Personally I couldn't tell for 100% sure, if the little girl was addressing Naina or Gia... If it was Gia's then who knows who she married, (after all she was what, at least 7 and it was 20 years later, so the little girl would more likely be Gia's than Naina and Rohit... either that or they waited a loooong time to adopt/get pregnant. So like I was thinking, if Gia grew up in new york, and married an american man, couldn't their daughter have looked like that?

reply

It's basically that she IS their biological daughter but living in America she has developed an accent and the hair could be coloured - you know the youth right?

reply

The little girl could've been adopted, like Gia was. Did anyone think of that?

reply

(she also has an American accent)
Why wouldn't she? She was born and raised in America.

Naina, Naina's siblings and Rohit should have American accents as well. That bothered me in the beginning of the movie.

Did anyone actually watch this film?

With their eyes and ears open?

The lady at the end is Gia.

Gia is Naina's half sister; her father had an affair and produced her. Jenny was accepting, even adopted her. Her husband could not cope with that so committed suicide.

reply

Not Gia, the young Caucasian girl who calls her mother to go inside because its cold. Naina answers her when she shouts for her mother. So, there may actually be something to the OP's theory. She's definitely Caucasian.
