Why do the characters not have American accents?

I get that they're talking in Hindi the majority of the time but when they speak on English it's in an Indian accent?? What?! That's some bad directing and acting. They didn't make any references to recently moving to New York which would explain their accent.

They are going to have an Indian accent when they speak in English. That's what any other person with an accent would do. They're gonna have an Indian accent no matter what if they've lived in America for a long time or not.
