What did Howl do?

When Howl left the castle to go out what was he doing exactly? Was he fighting both sides? Sabotaging both sides? Just watching? Working? What was his motivation? He seemed to hate the war but was always going around it.

I'm sure this has been asked before but I was curious if anybody really has a great explanation or interpretation.
