Not to criticize Mystery of the Batwoman, but I'd love to see a really good MYSTERY movie. Maybe something based on one of Jeph Loeb's runs, like the Long Halloween. Or maybe something in the same vein, but original.

I'm really craving a good Batman mystery movie, that really involves me as a viewer. I want to be working along at the same time, rather than having Batman follow the odd clue - or make it painfully obvious.

Or, a Dark Knight Returns animated.
I guarantee, if done right, it would vastly outsell Mask of the Phantasm.

Unless it's Justice League related, I doubt there will be another Batman movie. Reason being: The Batman owns the rights to all the classic Batman villians now except for Ra Sha Ghul and Scarecrow, and those two belong to Batman Begins. I don't know about other characters like Alfred or Batgirl or Robin, but pretty much they'll really have to stretch a plot out for a solo Batman movie that's in the DC cartoon continuity but not with him being in the Justice League.

Because of The Batman (which is okay, but in my opinion no comparison to the most recent Batman cartoon incarnation), I doubt you'd see any solo Batman stuff from the prior Batman series. That's unfortunate because, frankly, I think many fans recognize that Batman incarnation more readily than the new one.

The only dispute I take up with that is the fact that Warner Brothers own the rights, and surely there's nothing stopping them from licensing characters to more than one production team.

I mean, why would they be able to do it with the Batman, and not his villains? That doesn't really make much sense to me. Particularly since one or two has popped up in JL/U.

I'd be content with the rumored Batman/Green Arrow movie, but I'd really love to see some more solo Batman films.

reply

Actually I've read that Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and the team behind the original Batman Animated Series do plan to create more direct to DVD movies. It's just a question of when.

Batman all the DC Characters are owned by DC Comics, which is owned by AOL Time/Warner. I would assume all the Batman characters would come in a package. Batman Begins didn't "just" get Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul--the director and writer simply chose from whatever villains hadn't been used yet.

reply

And a fine choice it was, too!

Let's not discount Mr. Zsaz and Carmine Falcone, either. :D

They have to make one to fill in some gaps left in between TAS and BB.
This film took a step backwards and didnt show really anything relevant in the Batman story.
Me, i'd make something after the events shown in Return of the Joker.
Not so much as an action or mistery film but more of a character driven thing showing Tim's recovery and his wedge with Bruce. As well as showing him going solo again and maybe even showing him donning the Beyond costume.
It'd be a serious and a dark film, cooler even by the fact that you could show Bats becoming rougher and more severe, colder even, as old Bruce is (and i believe that he makes fun of his younger self about being softer in JLU's "The once and future thing").
And ending like Phantasm did (a bittersweet ending with Bruce taking the mantle again in a rather forced, reluctant but necessary way), but with the new suit and a saddest, lonely Bruce. (or even add the Bunny Vreeland kidnap)

reply

I say they should have a film on the secrets of catwoman with batman. They haven't done that yet.

reply

well, it wasn't in a movie, but this past Saturday's Justice League Featured Terry McGuiness Batman Beyond. Added a new twist to it, too. Also cameoed some of the BB Justice league and an incarnation of the Royal Flush Gang. I didn't look, but it has Bruce Timm and Paul Dini's handiwork ALL over it. Kinda of like a swan song to the BB series. Something they wanted to get out, but couldn't get around to it in the series before it ended.

reply

The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel would make a wicked animated movie, so long as it was done right. I immediately thought it'd make a great animated movie after I finished reading it. It's such a great graphic novel!

reply

It would, wouldn't it?

I simply. Am not. There

reply

Well, it's not the Bruce Timm/ Paul Dini universe, but it's a solo Batman movie. "The Batman vs. Dracula" is supposed to release this october, it's from "The Batman" cartoon. I'm a big fan of the show and can't wait for this movie.

reply

Well good for you personally I hate that piece of crap and you must be like 10 years old to like that.

reply

I'm thinking of 3 possible direct to DVD animated movies that should be done from TAS:

One of them should involve both Ra's al Ghul and Scarecrow. Let us see what Bruce W. Timm and company can do with a Batman movie that combines the same two main villains from Batman Begins, but of course, uses the origins and such that were already established for the two villians in the animated series.

The second movie would be a Victor Zsasz movie. I would love to see Batman doing some detective work to figure out who is killing people off in the city at a very fast rate. Villian cameos for The Penguin (since he's the one that caused Zsasz to loose all of his money), and maybe a few others like Catwoman, Joker, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy.

The final film would be a sequel to Mask of the Phantasm where the Phantasm makes some sort of return to Gotham after The Joker resurfaces still alive... I'm not sure what kind of plot could be used, but it would be awesome even still.

reply

they shuld just make one BIG 2 hour lost years movie. thatd be AWESOME.

reply

There was a comic book sequel to Mask of the Phantasm with Arthur Reeves in it.

reply

I'd like to see a JLU DTV starring Ra's Al Ghul as the villain. Depicting the "Apocalypse of '09".

reply

wow, Alex, you're still a *beep* moron i see.

as for new BTAS DTV's, my hope is that Marvel does really well with their whole DTV adaptation deal, paving the way for Dini and Co to finally deliver on the tease of "Tales of the Dark Knight" and give us a Dark Knight Returns animated mini-series through Cartoon Networks [adult swim]

Paintballforlife do you think that all anime is like Pokemon?
I love Anime and thats because a very big part of the anime made in Japan is aimed for teens or adults.
They make much MUCH more anime in Japan thats not aimed for little kids than the ones that are.
Anime is more popular in japan than normal live action movies and adults watch it too over there.

I hate people like you that think the anime shows that are the most well known in the west like pokemon, sailor moon and dragon ball are the only types of Anime they make over there in Japan.
serously many people really seems to belive that shows like pokemon are the only type of television they watch in Japan.
In the west most people think that cartoons is only for small children so they of course only show anime thats aimed for children here.

In my opinion Anime is much better than most of the garbage you see on American televison today.
The only interesting American stuff i have seen on television in a very long time now is stuff like family guy and south park and super hero shows like Batman and justice league.
And i like the 2 Stargate shows.

Anime for the most part got a lot better storytelling and interesting characters than American shows and they are mostly hundred times more exciting.

Try some anime thats not AIMED for little children for once and you will see that all anime is not about a boy that must catch pokemon.
And all anime shows dont have kung fu fighting like in the Batman if thats what you think.
It seems when people see there very first Anime show they think thats the only kind of show they watch in Japan.
Compared to most of the worthless garbage America does today Anime is a hundred time better.

If you like Batman and more serious cartoons i dont see any reason as to why you shoudnt love Anime because there are hundreds of serious anime shows similar to Batman.
I love Batman but there are many Anime shows with much better storys.

And another thing.
Japan is a different country far away and they got a different culture so of course there televison can be a little different.

Many people seems to think that the way everything looks and behave in American television is how it should be everywhere just beause thats what they are used to and thats really irritating.

So just because many different countrys does some stuff differently some people think there own country is the one thats making it how its supposed to be.
Be more open minded people for crying out load.

And i often watch tv-series and movies from many different countrys and its a lot of fun
Most Americans only want to see American shows i suppose.

I doubt that there will be any more animated Batman movies as part of the "Timm-verse" that included B:TAS, S:TAS; Batman Beyond, Justice League/JLU, etc.

There also doesn't seem to be any more Batman DTVs spun off of Kids' WB!'s The Batman in the immediate future; although, Jeff Matsuda had pitched a "Hush" flick before he left the show.

The best shot for the near future seems to be the "DC Universe" DTV animated movies. Justice League: The New Frontier, based on the comic-book miniseries DC: THE NEW FRONTIER by Darwyn Cooke, has Batman as a supporting player. He'll have at least a cameo in Superman: Doomsday. We can hope that a future project will center on Batman more directly, such as a feature-length version of BATMAN: YEAR ONE or THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS.

Well he's been doing DCAU stuff for quite a while, and I imagine he kinda misses it.

I could sit through an animated movie about Batman hunting down the Scarecrow. Just as long Kevin Conroy returns to voice Batman.

reply

Lol, we're all addicted to Kevin Conroy's voice. And actually all the original BTAS or TNBA voice cast.

His voice fits Batman the best. And I grew up with it.

reply

If they do make another Batman Animated movie(TBAS) I think they should bring back the Scarecrow. That recreation of the Scarecrow(which went through a number of evolutions) had the best look out of the whole list in the New Batman adventures. That is my favroite version of the scarecrow.

Warner Animation has announced that an anime-style direct-to-video movie will bridge the gap between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. It should be released from two to four weeks before The Dark Knight is released in theatres.

Heard about that. Like Japanese Anime?

reply

Batman: Gotham Knight was okay. It was nice with the Anime style, I'm not used to it but it was fun. But it wasn't like an actual movie like the other BTAS movies were. They were just different like 5 or so different storys and I didn't see how it conected with Batman Begins and TDK.

Ain't It Cool News confirms that the sixth direct-to-video DC Universe Original Animated PG-13 Movie (following Green Lantern: First Flight) will be Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. The film is in production already with Bruce Timm as Executive Producer. It is expected to be released in Fall 2009. A synopsis follows:

United States President Lex Luthor uses the oncoming trajectory of a kryptonite asteroid to frame Superman and declare a $1 billion bounty on the heads of the Man of Steel and his "partner in crime" Batman. Super heroes and super villains alike launch a relentless pursuit of Superman and Batman, who must unite – and recruit super help – to stave off the action-packed onslaught, stop the asteroid, and uncover Luthor's devious plot to take command of far more than North America.

CBR News talks to Jeph Loeb (who wrote the story that the film is based on) about the movie: http://comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=20453

And, Comics Continuum reveals who is writing the adaptation:
Stan Berkowitz is the writer of Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, the upcoming animated movie from Warner Premiere, The Continuum has learned.

Berkowitz, an animation veteran, wrote Justice League: The New Frontier, an earlier entry in the series of PG-13 rated animated film based on DC Comics properties.

Berkowitz has written for such super-heroes shows as Legion of Super Heroes, The Batman, Justice League, Static Shock, Batman Beyond, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman: The Animated Series and Spider-Man.

The movie is based on the comics story by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness. It will be released after Green Lantern: First Flight, probably this fall.

reply

Bruce Timm and his people over at the Warner Premier and Original DC Animated Films are making BATMAN: UNDER THE HOOD. Though it won't be a part of the DCAU continuity and will probably include Jason Todd-the Robin who never got made coz he's supposed to STAY DEAD!-at any rate, Timm, Dini, Burnett, Randomski and the rest reworked Tim Drake's story into Todd's (origin) and in the TNBA it was basically Todd only having Drake's name. Even in Return of the Joker they 'offed' Robin like Todd was killed off. So there's some parallel there. An obsessed fan (like me :P) would probably see similarities between the continuities at any rate.

Instead of BATMAN BEYOND, the third incarnation of Bruce Timm's series could've taken hints from KNIGHTFALL and NO MAN'S LAND; crippled Barbara (made her Oracle) and went from there. That would've been epic, not that BATMAN BEYOND wasn't.

I personally think they ought to adapt BATMAN: YEAR ONE with all of Frank Miller and David Mazzuchelli's noir visuals at work. The animated world allows for a dark, matured Batman story (GOTHAM KNIGHT) so no point in not doing YEAR ONE or LONG HALLOWEEN with similar sentiments.

reply

Just wish they hadn't stopped The Animated Series and Batman Beyond. Love both of those shows! Wish they had more movies as well. Can never get enough Batman.

reply

They had to stop eventually. They couldn't go on forever. Better to end them while they were still very good quality.

The next, animated DC Comics Premiere Movie(s) will be adapted it two parts from Frank Miller's 1986 graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 will be released in Fall 2012. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 will be out in early 2013. The two films will be directed by Jay Oliva from a screenplay by Bob Goodman. Peter Weller (RoboCop is set to voice Bruce Wayne/Batman. Ariel Winters will voice Carrie Kelly, Batman's new Robin.

Well, nave_miller, hopefully you've seen Batman: Year One and liked it. Some thought it was too much like the graphic novel; some thought it strayed too far from the original. You can never please everybody. Unfortunately, Batman: The Long Halloween would be too long and complex to adapt into a DC Comics Premiere animated movie.
