Swades Vs. The Rising

Two of the celebrated director and actor returned to the screen after 3 and 3.5 years respectively. In both the movies the subject is Patriotism but with a difference. For both the movies theme is India. Both the movies talk about castism, state of women, our internal, differences and under dogs rising to the challange and taking things in there own hand. Which one you think is the better movie. For me it has to be Swades because this movie has a soul of its own which is where The Rising fall short of. What do you think?

reply

I would probably say The Rising. While I loved both, I think Swades suffered a little bit from not really having a strong premise at the beginning (why Mohan went to India). Both were excellent though.

My name is sanity

reply

Swades for me.

Gowariker has a very understated narrative and visual style that I really like.

reply

Give me The Rising any day. Swades harly held my interest. The Rising definately inspires more. I like Gowariker as a director, but I didn't think Swades was a good follow-up to Lagaan.

reply

Swades for me too and Im a die hard Aamir fan and cant stand Shah Rukh most of the time!
Swades had soul while Rising was great too but it lacked that depth and honesty which Gowarikar felt for his project. Risng imo was aimed at the foreign audience while Sawdes was made for Indians and evoking a sense of self .

reply

The Rising, blindfolded & with one hand tied behind its back. Just like Dboy, I get bored with Swades.

Arre yeh jeena bhi koi jeena hai lallu!

I loved Swades more than Rising. I felt Swades had a much better script and more soul than Rising does. Although I loved Rising......but I loved it in parts. The performances were awesome - especially Aamir gave his soul to the character of Mangal Pandey, technically the movie was brilliant, the dialogues were great and some scenes of Rising were truly outstanding and inspiring. But Swades was the film with the better flow, the script was much better, music was much better and in place with the story, and also SRK performed as good as Aamir did in The Rising (very rare, but SRK was brilliant in Swades, no one can deny that). I wish Ashutosh Gowariker had directed The Rising......he would've made a much better film. I agree Swades was preachy and almost documentary-like, but that was the premise of the film. Swades wasn't meant to be an epic that The Rising is.....it was just an honest plea from Gowariker, thats why it has got more soul !

reply

The Rising

reply

both but the ''the Rising''. definetley.. yes..

reply

Swades

Hands Down. very simple true to life film which had an emotional quotient and a soul.

Rising was technically good but something was missing. Besides lacking that emotional punch it had excessive dosage of all the actresses CLEAVAGE that aint bad but not in a movie abt patriotism.

reply

Swades is a brilliant movie.(IMO better than Lagaan).I was so absorbed while watching it for the first time that I almost didn't notice how HOT Gayatri Joshi is!
Yet to watch The Rising. I have seen the trailers....not all that impressive....

Musically, Swades is light years ahead of The Rising.(That doesn't mean Rising is not good).

reply

There is easily room in my world for both of the movies. To compare them is like comparing apples and oranges, or chalk and cheese, they are very different films. They are similar in that they both have high production values in every area. They have flaws too, but most films do. It's great to see Amir Khan in another historical movie like Lagaan, though he was fine in Dil Chata Hai. I love Shahrukh and almost everything he does. But both these films, Swades and The Rising, are far better than any of the silly movies churned out by Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar or any other BW star.

The Rising is a far better movie than SWADES.
Though its a good film with a good message, but something is missing in it. Even music of swades compared to mangal pandey is not very outstanding. The only better part of swades was Ashutosh Gowarikar. The direction was good and he suceeded in getting a good performance from shahrukh.
Mangal Pandey - The Rising is really a good movie. Though it has some defects but its worth a watch. Aamir Khan has given yet another knock out performance, and has proved that no other actor could have given justice to mangal pandey's character than him. Rani and Amisha are good in there small roles. Some songs like almaddat maulah and rasiya seem like forcefully put in. Mangal Mangal is excellent and is the theme song of the film. Some scenes like the sati scene, the scenes in which aamir comes to know the truth of cartridges and the one in which Toby stevens tell him to apologise are excellent. Ketan Mehta as the director has done his job well.
Also if ashutosh gowarikar had been the director of this film then obviously Mangal Pandey-The Rising would have been a mile stone in Indian Cinema like Lagaan.

Also Shahrukh is a good actor but when you see him acting, you see shahrukh khan on the screen. But when you see aamir khan acting, then you see the character and not aamir khan.

Thanx.

1.brilliant acting by shahrukh far better than amir
Srk was good in Swades but Aamir is better any given day.

3.great diection by ashutosh gowariker a lot better than ketan mehta who gave us crap like maya memsaab
Ketan Mehta also gave us movies like Mirch Masala

5.atleast swades does not have a crap and erotic song like rasiya(what the hell)
Rasiya is a great song. Whats wrong with so called 'erotic' song?

6.the protagonist of swades mohan bhargava does not go to the prostitutes unlike mangal pandey.
Something seriously wrong with you. Don't be a hyper-ethical hypocrite. Why the hell is it necessary that the main protagonist should be 100% idealistic in the eyes of the 'society'?

reply

Yeah, SRK is brilliant in Swades....but Aamir is equally brilliant as Mangal Pandey.

And Ketan Mehta's not a crap filmmaker....he's given movies like Mirch Masala and Bhavni Bhavai. But yeah, I agree Ashutosh Gowariker would have been a more apt director for Mangal Pandey.

The music of Swades is certainly better than Mangal Pandey, but whats that crap about erotic song? Swades has a theme that's very different from Mangal Pandey....so obviously the songs and situations are going to be entirely different.

Yeah, Mohan Bhargav dint go to prostitutes and Mangal did......so does that really make a difference? I bet, if there was a nautch-girl like Rani Mukherji in Charanpur (the village that Mohan goes to), even he would have gone there....lol

Sharoukh Khan cannot be called a better actor. He has mastered a formula that works and he uses it again and again. He is successful most in films made by Karan Johar and his ilk. I have not noticed a single note of versatility in his acting. He is the most predictable actor we have today.

In contrast AAmir is a thinking actor. He may have done formula films at one time but he has made a conscious effort to think out of the box and we need to commend him for that.

Devdas was nothing but a lot of hoopla and colour. The older version of the movie was a masterpiece. In Swades even though Sharoukh tried to underplay his character he did not succeed because he simply cannot get out of the formulaic acting that he has gotten used to.

rising is okay.
but swades is better.
rising has been bent into the mould of a cliched entertainer.
swades is the most uncynical movie of our times, with a great performance by SRK.
