3 ice-creams

If Nicola hadn't insisted that Giorgia go and buy the 3 ice-creams on her own, a very different history might have then followed.

It is interesting how the smallest, seemingly insignificant, decisions in life sometimes end up impacting the wider journey in ways we can never imagine...

Regarding Matteo (already discussed in depth elsewhere):

My own feeling is that his enigmatic character may be better understood upon a closer examination of the books he reads in the story - especially the poetry.

There is always something of a man's character in his choice of books - and something of his soul in his choice of poetry.

Sean.

Indeed.. Or if Mirella had gotten over her apprehension and anger and picked up the phone a second earlier.

oh gosh. yes, those 2 points are both so on the money, although Mirella's actions were more than reasonable given the circumstances at the time, I think. :)

I watched this movie again and noticed one thing. Giorgia get caught on purpose. She realized that Matteo would be in trouble and didn't know what to do. That is why she stayed there and said she was alone. She was clever and Matteo knew that.

And that is also the reason why he went to army. If the system can do that the girl you like and you cannot do nothing, how do you keep living the normal life.

bluesneyes, thanks because i'm at beginning of movie and I just watched that scene and could not understand why she said that and why they didn't try to "rescue" her, but of course now I do. This movie is really unlike any movie I've ever seen. I wish I had heard of it before this year.

I just watched the movie. I don't think she actually got caught on purpose (maybe that's not even what you're saying), but once she noticed the soldiers, or what ever they were, she panicked (with her illness and all), went back at the counter and didn't know how to naturally get out of the situation, which would be just to take the change and go. So they ask her questions and she says she's alone. BUT once they escort her out, both Matteo and Nicola see her and she shakes her head at them as to say "don't say anything". So I agree, she was doing a smart thing at that point.

srm-1...

I think you've hit the nail dead-center here. Every decision we make in life - no matter how seemingly trivial - could (and usually does) ultimately alter what the future may hold for us, while also affecting many of the people who are, or will become an integral part of our existence. I believe this was a key message the film intended to convey.

Through the years, most of the characters' lives were molded and/or changed from a single decision, by either choice or chance. To name just a few, Nicola insisting that Giorgia buy the ice cream, then choosing the field of psychiatry, which unintentionally led to finding and rescuing her. Giulia abruptly leaving for her cause, only to later warn Francesca of her husband's danger. Sara's whimsical decision to finally forgive her mother.

And in the end, it was a simple glance at a wall poster for a photo exhibit that, from Mirella's "chance" encounter with Matteo, eventually culminated in a renewed spirit and peace for his mother and Mirella through Andrea. This also created a snowball effect which finally - with the help of each other - brought Giorgia out of her shell and a long-lost, much-deserved happiness to Nicola.

However you look at it, an exceptional film that I watched in a single sitting and would do so again.

I don't agree, even if Mirella wasn't caught there she would have been caught at some other point of time since what they did was essentially abduction. Moreover they didn't really have any concrete plan regarding what to do with her.

The only thing that could have been different if Nicola hadn't insisted on the ice cream is that Giorgia could have possibly ended up in another institution.
