Hitler moustache

In the movie it was made out that Hitler was encouraged to change his appearance and make it unique to him so as to sell himself as a leader. He shaved both ends of his moustache. I thought he did this because he was unable to get an air tight seal from his gas mask. Can anyone clarify please?

In this film, Ernst Hanfstaengle (Liev Schreiber) suggested to Hitler that he should have a more unique and recognizable image. Hanfstaengle pointed out to Hitler that when one thinks of Lenin, one thinks of bald and bearded. Hitler's new look was an attempt to convey a more recognizable and unique image.

This, along with the use of the swastika (artfully conceived by Hitler himself) were part of the marketing, branding, packaging and selling of the Nazi leader.

There are many rumors of Hitler. I read a book from his own doctor ("Patient Hitler" by Ernst Gunther Schenck), without any rumors, only facts (there´s even a book "was Hitler gay?" - nonsense).
Hitler had that moustache to distract from his big nose, that´s all. And then it was going to be a trademark, so he couldn´t just shave it - everyone would ask why. But the reason itself was his big nose.

well here's another rumor. I heard he got the idea from charlie chaplin. Originally he hated Chaplin, because he thought Chaplin was a jew, but since he was popular, Hitler adopted chaplin's moustache style. Again this is just another rumor. I'm not even sure I believe it myself.

After I got to Sin City, all the color came back.

I was also under the impression that he chose that moustache style so that when people would see him they would somehow relate him to Chaplin, who at the time was enourmasly popular.

reply

In fact that style of moustache was quite common at the time. Oliver Hardy wore one, too.

Ahh so..

Well it's been quite a while since I've logged in the IMDB forum. It's great to read your posts, most interesting stuff!

I think I've heard about the Charlie Chaplin rumor but maybe not back when I posted the question.

I saw the gas mask thing in a WWII documentary & read it in a book though I cannot recall the sources. But I'm sure that Hitler realized that it was beneficial to his self image..

Thank you for confirming & to you all for your help!

I think this moustache was popolar simply because the hairs in the middle of the moustache grow better than the hairs on the ends, so it's much thicker in the middle. (I noticed this on myself).
so people wanted to just keep the thick part of the moustache and shave off the weak parts.

too bad that Hitler ruined this look for everybody for all time

It was never a good look. Maybe this is one beneficial thing Hitler accomplished.

"I was cured all right!"

it's a great look.

look at Charlie Chaplin.

the hair grows thickest in the middle, right bellow the nose, compared to the sides.

I want to grow it like that but can't because of bloody Hitler

A moustache is irrelative to a gas mask, most Royal Marines sport a tach. It is the beard that is not allowed, apart from the navy, the only rasnk that is allowed to grow a beard is the Pioneer Sergent. The Fuhrers glorious moustache was indeed purely cosmetic.
