Guernica on the Cheap

Did you see the way they portrayed the Guernica bombing in this show? It's like one German plane did all the damage!

reply

Oooooops!! You mean there was more than one plane!!?? You're right, in retrospect that scene was underwhelming as the representation of a war atrocity.

reply

Yes of course it was done on the cheap, and I thought the planes should have been bigger bombers, but the series was brilliant and big budget so they would not want to use half their budget on an action sequence.
If you did not know what GUERNICA means then you probably would not want to watch the programme anyway.

One of Picasso's most famous paintings in of the terror in Guernica.

Yes, I thought it was a weak spot.. but the other replies .. what else could they do without either great expense .. or the equally weak sound of airplane engines... faces lookup .. more engine noise..
Well, perhaps just not show the bombing.. have someone in a cinema watching news reel,, then visit and see the dead child?
Hey, I'm not the producer.. glad I didn't make the decision..

I always sympathise with those doing great work on a tight budget and sometimes the constraints can inspire greater creativity (much film noir, for instance). I love this series but the Guernica scenes were a real blemish. They almost lampooned this infamous war crime.

Rayincumbria's idea of using actual contemporary media coverage (newsreel if available) is the obvious solution.

Thank you.. and always glad someone else was watching this.
