How did they get footage of him if he was already dead? Was it stock footage or did they just recreate his face and voice?

I think the footage used for Sky Captain came from a BBC documentary/interview.

I think the audio was culled from various sources (Olivier speaking in interviews, movies, etc.) and then pieced together to create Olivier's lines.
