There is the 1991 movie "The Rocketeer". "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" and "The Rocketeer" http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0102803/ are both very good are unfortunately the only retro-futuristic movies made recently. Also I highly reccommend the 1927 movie "Metropolis" http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0017136/ It is silent, but it is so good you hardly notice. It is extremely retro-futuristic, and has special effects that are so amazing that it is hard to believe that it was made so long ago. "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" actually has a tribute to "Metropolis" in it. The mysterious woman is a tribute to the evil Maria robot in "Metropolis", which was also the inspiration for C3PO. I actually consider "Metropolis" to be the greatest masterpiece ever made. Many people who usually hate silent movies love it. You might also like such movies from the 1930s as "Things to Come" http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0028358/and "Just Imagine" http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0021016/, or classic serials like "King of the Rocket Men"(the inspiration for "The Rocketeer")http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0041547/, or "Buck Rogers" http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0032290/. I hope this helps.

yeah thanks for the good info. im a fan of metropolis and the rocketeer. its strange that there is not much else in the genre.

I agree. I wish there was more too. The reason they don't make many like this anymore is because people today want everything to be "modern". I wish more people appreciated nostalgia.

Though it has a very different vibe, Brazil is also retro-futuristic. Its setting is sort of non-time that looks like a cross between the 40s, the 80s, and some ugly, Orwellian future.

This sort of thing kind of borders on alternate History, like Fatherland, too. Fatherland is set in an alternate 60s, where Hitler won WWII, eventually signing for peace with President Joseph Kennedy. The story is a murder mystery sparked by an American reporter visiting German occupied France (if I remember right), and an SS officer (now the German equivalent of the FBI). I've heard the book is amazing, but the movie was really good, too.

Another you might enjoy would be City of Lost Children, a french movie set in another sort of non-time. It's a bit more fanciful, but very cool.

Unfortunately, the place where this sort of story seems to be done most is in anime, and I can't stand anime, so I don't have any real recommendations.

Add Things to Come and Sky Raiders (aka Gunbus). Things to Come features the fantastic scenes of the the Wings Over the World (WOW) attack on the Boss, in giant Deco flying wing bombers, followed by the building of an underground futuristic city, a futuristic gyrocopter, and a space launch cannon. great design work. Sky Raiders is a WWI story with giant Gotha bombers and a massive Zeppelin that is attacked by small planes, before being destroyed. Spy Smasher features anothe fantastic flying craft and great stuntwork (aped heavily in Raiders of the Lost Ark). Zeppelin is a good one for an airship romp, though it is more of a historical piece.

Maybe one day someone will wise up and make a Blackhawk movie.

I love this kind of genre and I find it strange how there isn't much out there that's like this from what I know.

I have yet to see the original Metropolis so I don't know if this one is the same story but it was amazing, don't get turned off by the fact that it's an animation for it was drawn fairly cartoony but the story, the scenery and the soundtrack was good and overall was very enjoyable! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0293416/

Overall I'd say we'd have to dig for the old black and white films. I wouldn't even know what category this goes under but I guess it would be a sub-category of sci-fi and there are some lists imdb http://www.imdb.com/list/PIca5-_2p5Q/

It has almost nothing in common with the original.

Well now there is the new Captain America movie, which I would lump in as retro-future. The reason there aren't many is typically these movies bomb at the box office. The Rocketeer and Sky Captain were box office failures. Captain America is doing well as did the Indiana Jones films, but movie studios probably chalk them to rare instances.

The movie actually looks a lot like the Disney afternoon cartoon "TaleSpin", but with people instead of animals.

Other borderline possibilities:

Meet the Robinsons
The City of Lost Children
Robots
Flesh Gordon
Barbarella

This guy has been working on his independent film for about 10 years now. It's a parallel history of manned space according to visions Collier's magazine in the 1950's. It looks amazing, but I seriously doubt it'll ever see the light of day.

I'd like to see Conran get another chance, however, I have serious doubts about a Solar System exploration film. There doesn't seem to be much interest in hat sort of thing. And the specter of Disney's two recent Mars flops would make anyone wary.
Also:
Mission to Mars (2000) was a flop.
Pluto Nash (2002) was a flop.
Moon (2009), a critical success but only $9.7M worldwide.

Successes:
Total Recall (1990) is the only Solar System exploration SciFi success I can think of off hand in recent times, and it was 22 years ago.
Armageddon (1997), not a fanciful kind of SciFi, but a big success.
Apollo Thirteen (1995) not SciFi.
2001: A Space Odyssey(1968), a moviegoing public of a different era.

I think starships have more appeal and a better track record.

You've got to see Cory McAbee's The American Astronaut:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0243759/

It's an utterly independent steam punk sci fi western cult classic...with tons of kick ass original music and truly surprising SFX. Permanently lodged in my top ten adventure flix of all time!!

"The Incredibles" has kind of a retro-futristic James Bond style to it.

I don't know how you feel about invasion type movies, but in the 1980's "Strange Invaders" paid homage to those great old sci-fi gems.

"The Shadow" is another retro-future sort of movie, though the gadgets are not real high-tech. It just has a great look, sort of like "Dick Tracy".

Yeah, The American Astronaut is great, and his Stingray Sam is even better: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1355599/?ref_=sr_3
