Polly Perkins

Damn, I just saw this movie and for the entire time 'Polly Perkins' s**t me to tears. All she did was complain, whine, piss and moan and to top it off, lied and held the vials so 'Joe' didn't know she had them - all for a *beep* STORY!!!
Then for her story, for the last hour continually looking at the film count on her camera - "I only have 2 shots left", well after the 13th time I heard it I couldn't give a s**t!
Also, through the early parts of the movie acted as though she didn't want to be with the sky captain, then once Jolie's character shows up, Polly acts as though Joe is cheating on her - WHY??
Then at the end, she nobly takes a pic of the beloved sky captain, then her face drops like a rock when he says "lens cap" - tries to act like she doesnt care, but its obvious she does.
Now this is not a rant about Gywenth Paltrow, in fact I like her as an actress, but the role of Polly Perkins was by far the most annoying character I have ever had to watch!!!!

That's my rant - bring on the abuse at me!! Yee Haw

Well, she was supposed to be stubborn, daring and kinda silly, just like Lois Lane was in the Golden Age...

but did she use an orgasmatron ?

yah this was boring , if only she was a chorus girl who liked to run around in scantily not so there attire the whole thing woulda been more fun

reply

Complaining and questioning every freaking thing Capt. did is not stubborn, daring or kinda silly. She was the epitome of a whiny bltch, and needed to be told to shut the ef up, at the very least, but probably should have been slapped silly.

Life is pain. Anyone who says differently is selling something.

reply

You can blame the whole thing on Gweneth Paltrow.

Her acting sucks.

reply

Neither Gwenyth nor the script was any good. I wanted to kill Polly Perkins! The fate of humanity is at stake, they're on a tight schedule, and all she can do is cry about not wanting to leave Joe. Pushing buttons, going back for stupid cameras (especially the predictable stupid ending with the last photo), and the like all drove me nuts.

Not to mention the state of Captain Obvious. We remember that there are STILL 2 shots left.

yah and after going thru the clothes eating jungle and a bunch of stripping critters she was still dressed !!!

were is a good raged torn up once apon a time victoria's secret string bikini thingy when you need one ?

reply

They're trying to save the world, and she's worried about an "exclusive". Terrible writing killed this movie, followed by Paltrow's wooden acting.

That's the idea -- she does some things that are somewhat despicable and those things motivate the plot and a lot of the character interactions. If she doesn't "sin", how can there be any redemption?

"Then for her story, for the last hour continually looking at the film count on her camera - "I only have 2 shots left", well after the 13th time I heard it I couldn't give a s**t!"

You're not supposed to be worried about her running out of film, at least by my way of seeing the movie you are supposed to be annoyed at her. That's why it's funny when she accidentally uses one of them while running over the log-bridge. That's how humor works -- you set up something that a character thinks is important, but really isn't, and then watch their reaction when they lose it. It's essentially the same as a pratfall, your basic comedic premise.

"Also, through the early parts of the movie acted as though she didn't want to be with the sky captain, then once Jolie's character shows up, Polly acts as though Joe is cheating on her - WHY??"

Check back with me in a few years and let's see if you're still confused.

"Then at the end, she nobly takes a pic of the beloved sky captain, then her face drops like a rock when he says "lens cap" - tries to act like she doesnt care, but its obvious she does."

I don't even have a clue why this would bother you. Again that's the essential humor of the situation, the fact that she considers the last shot so important, but Joe doesn't. So Joe feels free to make a joke about it, which he knows will annoy her. It's kind of a form of foreplay. Again check back with me in a few years.

"Now this is not a rant about Gywenth Paltrow, in fact I like her as an actress, but the role of Polly Perkins was by far the most annoying character I have ever had to watch!!!! "

sounds like the film-makers did their job well then.

Did I not love him, Cooch? MY OWN FLESH I DIDN'T LOVE BETTER!!! But he had to say 'Nooooooooo'

Yes but for me all that stuff was put into place when Jude Laws laughs blatently and loudly at her after she falls over on the log and loses a picture. I was getting anoyed at it as well, but that really put it all in its place.

.. plus I've been in that 'only 2 shots left' situation back in days before digital camera's (though I doubt many people can remember those times anymore), so I guess I could empathize with her :)

After watching and listening to Polly for a while I thought that there was only one thing missing (given the period of the film). The girl needed a trip over Jude Law's knee for an old fashioned 'attitude adjustment' with the palm of his hand. Sorry but I began to think that a good old fashioned spanking would do her a world of good.

reply

It will be interesting to see her in Iron Man.

reply

It was the best English accent she's ever done.

Paltrow is such a grating wench.

Polly Perkins was the number one reason why I didn't like this film.

Ok, the script wanted a generic story-obsessed reporter woman, but even so, I thought she was over the top and excessively annoying. Every time she opened her mouth I wanted to punch something.

Maybe if I were watching it with a friend or crowd so I could laugh at how annoying she was, but since I was alone, there was no comic relief to be had.

Either it was the director fault or hers I felt the character kind of dry, I felt that the character like hers needed to be bit more of a Rossalind Russell type and be more gutsy. Sometimes I wonder if Gwyneth was a bit unsure about how to play her character.

reply

The only thing that annoyed me about Polly was that she put up with so much crap from Jude's character. Seriously, she's not the most likeable character but the guy is an *beep*

reply

Seriously, Sky Captain is a *beep*?
hmmmm....

He's an illusionist...which is just a fancy word for magician.

reply

I think you are missing the point. She is supposed to get in the way and cause trouble. The "annoying" things she does are for comic relief. I think the script and Paltrow's performance were well-done.

reply

I agree with hbenthow completely. I just watched this movie, and I think some people are missing the point. These aren't supposed to be well-rounded characters that you can empathize with. With the melodramatic style of the movie, they're kind of supposed to be two dimensional. So Polly was the typical story-obsessed reporter who runs around with her camera while looking perfect.

As for why she seemed to start caring after Franky came along - if she seemed to not care before, it was because she wasn't trying to give her feelings away! Both Joe and Polly hurt each other's pride, so they had this tension between them and didn't want to seem vulnerable - emotionally or professionally. I LOVED the dynamic between them. It was hilarious.

I thought this movie was great fun, not meant to be serious at all. The visual and sound were so impressive. The only thing that bothered me was Jude Law's accent. Was it supposed to be British or 40's movie star American or what?

reply

Jude Law simply used his real voice. In real life he's British, so I suppose that he's playing British, in that he comes from England, or perhaps inherited the accent from his parents who are British. Yet he's American in the sense that he's an American citizen.
