Decided to re watch this movie last night. Everything looks so damn cheaply fake! The cgi, including the aircraft, sets, backgrounds, and even the acting. The plot was compelling at least, but I wondered what people really thought back then lol.
I was never meant to look real. It's supposed to look sort of like pulp novel cover paintings as viewed through a film noir lens. It does look slightly more real if viewed in black and white (which is how Kerry Conran wanted it to be).
Courage, men! we've not sunk before, and we'll not sink now!

Obviously that was the intent. This was meant to be a spoof/homage to all those cheesy serials of the 30s and 40s where they tried their best but everything looked fake. This movie tried to recreate that feel. You are just used to modern CGI making everything look too good.
Take the movie for what it was; a fun homage to the lost days of movie making.
