Glaring flaw or not? (possible spoiler?)

Perhaps I'm mistaken on this, but there seemed to be one *HUGE* glaring flaw in the plot.

Don't know if I should call it a spolier or not, but I guess to be safe, I should.

Will and Kylie were the last two descendants in their family, right? That's why they got the New Brunswick house in the will. But who were they descended from? The mother and Erica had both died on the island without leaving any heirs.

Remember when the storekeeper lady had declared "you must be Erica's grandchildren....Erica who ran off to Europe". But Erica hadn't run off. She died there with no children.

Who were Will and Kylie descended from?

I remember something being said about the mother writhing to her brother, warning him that he may need to find the strength to kill his children.
