He's on long enough for you to be convinced his character's a complete pr!ck and then he's gone (thankfully).

Your reply:

Oh, come on - he's not a COMPLETE pr!ck - he does tell Christian where he can find Aaron (which kind of surprises me).

BTW, I thought he did a really good job in this supporting role - the only other thing I had seen him in was The Lookout - which was a great performance!

"Oh come on" back atcha. He told Christian only after being threatened as I recall. What's surprising about that?

If you're going to judge a person's heart, you have to judge it based on what he believes. From that perspective, he was only trying to protect his friend. Consider this line, from the same scene you've referred to:

I actually liked the guy. He took this whole thing serious as a heart attack, but we were getting through it...

That shows some real thought and a feeling of being "on the same side". His character clearly cared about Aaron. Being a homophobe and reacting poorly to shocking and uncomfortable situations may be faults, but they don't make the guy a "pr!ck" by default.

I suppose not jiminy...but the "God hates f@gs" remark to Christian earlier in the film sure sounds "pr!ck-like" to me--remarkable coincidence that that God hates the same thing he does. Also, when Aaron was consoling Jaqueline Bissett outside the hospital, Leavitt's character got upset because it delayed, or even canceled, their lunch break--who's side was he on then?

We're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one; Leavitt's done some amazing work prior and subsequent to this film but IMO, this is by far his least likable character.

reply

Actually, I don't think we have to agree to disagree... I've only seen the movie once, and I had forgotten about the remark you pointed out. I agree that it was a very "pr!ck-like" thing to say, and a lie to boot. And the impatience during the hospital scene definitely shows some shallowness/selfishness.

Maybe Cox intended us to understand that he was beginning to change at the end of the film. Or maybe he wanted us to see him as a full, round character who is outwardly hostile toward gay men, but is fully capable of liking and even caring about them when he knows them personally.

He wasn't still being threatened when he told Christian where Aaron was. I think he was genuinely touched(in spite of himself)when he realized that Christian cared so deeply about Aaron. That's why he told him about the delay between flights. While I'm sure he still wasn't pro-gay on the whole, he knew and truly liked Aaron and maybe his opinion of Christian was changing too. I think Ryder was like a lot of people who as a generalization seem to be prejudiced against a group or race of people, but when they get to know an individual are capable of true friendship.

"WHAT KNOCKERS!"
"OH--SANK YOU DOCTOR!"

He auditioned for the role of Aaron. Didn't get it. I wonder what the movie would have been, considering Levitt has become one of the most respected actors of his generation.

I read that as well and to be honest the only person I didn't buy in this film was Christian. There was something about him that I just couldn't stand. I liked Aaron a lot more and I think Joseph as Christian would've worked a lot better because I can see him portraying the kind of emotions that were needed for that role that the actor playing Christian couldn't really pull off.

reply

We don't actually get to see it in the film.
