**Question- please help (tatoo?)

ok this might sound stupid but i was surprised to see the tatoo on Kenji's back when he punches the jerk boyfriend. i thought that was some sort of yakuza sign, but his personality doesnt seem to fit that. can anyone fill me in? thanks
