I never noticed until now....I've just paused the movie to state this.....When Kenji drops Noi off at the airport, Kenji says "Wait for me" Then leaves to get his things, he of course never makes it back.....this is why Noi is sitting in the airport all alone waiting for him at the end but he never shows. I suggest watching the movie again to confirm.

Yes thats why when he goes home he gets his passport etc, but then the yakuza guys come, kenji escapes, then, a while later we see him in jail -well a questioning room or something like that- so its clear to me that he didn't get there (to the airport) or that he didn't get there in time.
But the ending is unclear; some think kenji is imagining his reunion with noi, some think he does actually meet her again...

Kenji was supposed to come back, but his stomach was upset from the food he ate, and one thing led to another, ultimately leaving Noi alone in the airport..
he got a stomach upset from the papaya salad that noi offered him before going to the airport haha.
i think noi didnt leave for osaka. i think she sat there waiting for him and she missed her flight because there were empty seats all around her in the waiting lounge.
and the images of her in osaka are probably what kenji dreamed of doing.
or it might be years later after his sentence that he went back to osaka.
I agree, Kenji was arrested for the murders he committed, and would thus never make it to the airport. Noi does wait, misses her flight...maybe she goes eventually, maybe not. But, Kenji fantasizes about her going, and, one day (just like he says the night they sleep in the car)he will go to Osaka and see her. But, since he's been arrested, there's probably no way he'll ever make it back to Japan (not without handcuffs and a police escort, anyways). So, after finally finding a connection with someone, Kenji will continue on, finally knowing, but unable to do anything about the fact, that he is not the last life in the universe.
