it was the black and white one that had an X or Bird-like image repeating itself until it turned to black on one side...

Sam, the print on Kenji's wall is a very famous work by the dutch graphic artist M.C. Esher. It is one of many works depicting the artists obsession with symmetry, an obsession also held by Kenji. The film itself depicts this symmetry by ending in the same way in which it began, only reversed.(dark to light, light to dark, just like the print)
I share your belief that a "great soundtrack makes a better movie", and this film certainly had a very haunting and beautiful soundtrack.
