In this time,I want to see The missing and Goodbye dragon Inn.I thinks there are lonely and drama loke Wong Kar Wai's movie ("I think")

reply

I agree with fullmoon-5.

I suggest you to try "In the Mood for Love" first. I'm quite sure, you'll like it too. =^^=

reply

I agree with Aimar the hobbit. "In the Mood for Love" is also a love story similar to this, slow-paced, beautiful cinematography (also by Chris Doyle). I have yet to see "Comrades: Almost a Love Story" with Maggie Cheung of "In the Mood the Love" but I've heard good things about it. Don't count too much on Thai movies. Directors like Pen-ek comes once in half a century. You should also try his other works like "Monrak Transistor" which is based upon a novel by a SEA Write winner. The movie broke my heart. His "6ixty-nin9" features Lalita Panyopas, one of Thailand's most famous actresses. It is nothing like "The Last Life in the Universe" though but it is a good film, much darker and more cynical. Have you see "The Road Home" with Zhang Ziyi, directed Zhang Yimou? It is also a beautiful love story.

Try Takeshi Kitano's 'Dolls'. It has quite some similarities and it makes that 'depressing' kinda atmosphere. It's not too similar but if u liked "last life...", you should like 'Dolls' as well, and it's a great film worth seeing anyway.
I also recently watched another film by Ratanaruang 'Monrak Transistor', it's also a touching love story, just not as 'artsy' and with less aesthetics and other stuff if compared to Last life. But as somebody mentioned somewhere "there's no way not to like it", it's also a great movie, I highly recommend.

Lost in Time - a great story with tons of heart. I don't really get into love story type movies but sometimes one is just so damn good that even an action buff as myself can shed a tear.

Oldboy - Racked up some awards at Cannes. Man, is this film great.

Brother - basically anything by Takeshi Kitano is a great Drama.

Battle Royal - one of the most intensely dramatic films ever.

yes oldboy reminded me a lot of last life in the universe ... it left me with that odd sensation of like sadness and love. A very good movie indeed.

I would recommend you WKW's Fallen Angels or anything Wong Kar Wai-ish for that matter. Dolls is a good one the same feelings you would get out of Last Life. There's a Korean film called Momento Mori which is sort of similiar but is of a bizarre triangle love story.

reply

try WKW's chungking express, christopher doyle again as the cinematographer

Christmas in August, a great Korean love story.

reply

I agree with all the recommendations of the films of WKW. Also, another similar and recent film is Kiyoshi Kurosawa's "Bright Future." And "Akame 48 Waterfalls" is also similar, but very hard to come by. Bright Future is available at my local Hollywood Video, so I don't think you will have much trouble finding it.

reply

I definitely agree with Oldboy.

On another note, does anybody know the name of this movie I'm thinking about now? It's about 2 detectives trying to find a serial killer, and the ending shows one of them just looking at the camera.

Anybody know? I hear it's pretty popular, but the name escapes me.

reply

Memories of Murder (South Korea)

reply

Thank you.

Just about any Wong Kar-Wai movie is obvious. I don't really agree with Oldboy though.

I'm surprised no one has said 'Yi Yi' yet, very much the same kind of melancholy direction, with fantastic cinematography.

reply

I'd recommend Yeonae Sosheol (or Lover's Concerto) from South Korea.
A great love story that I know you'd like if you enjoyed Last Life.

reply

I recommend Tsai Ming-liang's films, such as "What time is it there?" and "Wayward Cloud". Also the films of Kim Ki-duk, especially Bin-jip (3-Iron) and The Bow.

The atmophere and the tone of the picture is kinda depressing, isolated and indifferent when you see his movies.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0874633/

Especially when you see Vive L'Amour(1994), The River (1997), The Hole(1998).

All the family members, in his eyes, are individual with some events that link them together.

Another Thai film called "Bangkok Dangerous".
