so....who did Snipes piss off?

Did Snipes come out and say he's a republican and loves Dubya. Got to be some reason why he isnt getting Hollywood work. Or is does he feel sorry for the Romanians and is helping them out a little, at the expensive of his career.

reply

Who needs Hollywood work? Straight to video can bring in some good revenue. I don't think Mr. Snipes is hurting for money or fame. Again, more and more movies are being made outside of the burned out Hollywood system. Hollywood for the most part is a joke. Indie films is a big business now, and doing very well may I add....

I disagree. Actors are always concerned that their films are doing well. Straight to video is a step backwards. Unlike Seagal, whose career tanked years ago, I don't think Snipes pissed anyone off. I think he decided that Hollywood wasn't the place for him after his fiasco with Blade:Trinity in which he was overriden even though he was an executive producer. Snipes was doing ok in Hollywood. I think he just wanted more control over his product. His talent made directors see him as an actor instead of just a "black" actor. How many other black actors were given the roles he had. Denzel and Morgan Freeman, right? Jamie Foxx hadn't even come close to where he is now. I think he just wanted more control over his product. In the Blade 2 dvd commentary, he talks about getting more "bang for the buck" in eastern Europe as opposed to the US movie market. He'd obviously rather be an action star. Doesn't excuse the fact that his recent releases have been so crappy. I think he probably burned alot of bridges here too with his big ego. Mickey Rourke syndrome maybe? Hopefully, we'll see him back starring in big pics stateside soon. Doing more than just action martial arts, but comedy and drama too.

If you think about it, Hollywood uses actors/actresses until they don't need them anymore. If an actor takes control of his films and career, that pisses Hollywood off. They always want to be in control. Why? For over 80 years they were the studio system. The big boys. But when EasyRider and Roger Corman and the indie groups like those surfaced, Hollywood knew they would be in trouble. Do you know that a studio losses are more now than ever before. Then they blame the actors and give them let jobs.

It's all about power. Straight to Video is not really a step backward, it is more or less staying in the game by all means possilbe. Hollywood like to put you where they think you belongs rather you like the move or not. It's true when they say, " You won't work in this town again". Hollywood has a long history of screwing people's lifes and career up. You make one or two wrong misstakes and they will kick you out of their circle. Look at Gary Coleman and that Home Alone kid just to mention a few. Hollywood is about money, power and image.

hes a massive cokehead tool. that is the only explanation for his terrible output

DTV a step back? Some of the DTV movies that populate the racks today have decent acting and production values that hold up to the Majors. Some of the movies are just as good too.The stigma of DTV is starting to fade if you ask me.

Case in point.A dtv movie like Detonator does not have to make back a huge P&A budget that comes with a theater release.IT just has to do well enough sales on DVD.If the movie gets released in other countries thats just gravy. Thus the movie is a success and in profit.Where a movie like say Blade 3 has to make 125 million to break even.

I think Wesley might be taking a break from Hollywierd. But if he goes back,he needs to pick stuff like his earlier movies.Mo BetterBlues,Jungle Fever,The waterdance, and New Jack city is where he gave his greatest preformances.

Well that would be all good and fine if these movies were'nt so crappy. The camera work is decent enough so why don't they spend more time developing better scripts. They're spending all the money on explosions and car chases and skimping on coherent storylines, continuity and editing. And fight scenes are expensive cuz even Seagal and Van Damme's video movies lack the martial arts flair of their big budget productions. But at least give us a decent story. I haven't seen one good Snipes post-Blade rental yet. 7 Seconds was fair, Unstoppable was crap. If he's gonna do video maybe he should avoid the action stuff and get back to his acting roots. Less action, more acting.

reply

Yeah thats a good point. With the kind of money these companies make off some of these action movies it would only be fair to give them a few more bucks,They might have a real winner on they're hands.

I cannot think of one Snipes DTV that delivered.7 seconds does seem to be the only one.Where at least Van Damme's last two were great.Seagal managed to put out a few decent DTV flicks. Its kind of funny they are now upstaging him.

I think it has to do with the companies he signed with.Andrew Stevens productions are not doing him any favors.

But I bet he could get a hollywood gig faster though. If he wanted too.

Yea, I have liked Van Damme's recent attempts at movies. I think he has done a good job and the movies were actually able to hold my interest. Wake of Death and In Hell I both liked a lot. I haven't seen any of Segal's DTV movies, but I saw 7 seconds from Wesley and would of rated it above average on an action scale.

Hopefully he does make some more movies, because I always thought of him as an incredibley awesome action star.

Methinks Mr. Snipes had every chance to prove his range wan't so limited early on and didn't make the cut. He always seemed to lack the subtle skills to pull off the dramatic roles that required the scrutiny of a multitude of coseups. His closest counterpart, Denzel Washington, was eventually proven to have a far wider range as a romantic lead and dramatic protagonist. That Snipes has, beginning largely with "The Art of War", become exclusively an action star comes as so suprise, really.

I disagree that he didnt make the dramatic actor cut. He''s had some great roles in drama and comedy (New Jack City, White Men Cant Jump, Disappearing Acts, Sugar Hill, etc) and while he's no Denzel, he can definitely hold his own. He has range. He's done just about every kind of role except family and horror genres.

I just think he decided to go into an area he excelled in, which was action. Besides, who wouldnt want to be an action star? The fact that Hollywood wholly accepted him was all the push he needed. He was getting roles that were written for white actors and became the first black action super hero actor since Fred Williamson and Jim Kelly. And a lead actor in major hollywood movies at that. "Art of War" was not his first action movie. "Passenger 57", "Demolition Man", "Blade", "Drop Zone", came before that.

he might need the cash now with his tax worries....

For the record he pissed off the guys at Newline. He and Goyer had major disagreements on the set of Blade Trinity. So he is out of the loop from this point.

reply

Well it looks like he is out of the woods with the IRS and made a decent movie

called Hard Luck, directed by Mario Van Peebles. He has Gallowalker that looks

to take him back to Blade teritory in the works, and he has Chaos and the

Shooter due out next year.I think Chaos might get a limited release because of

his co-stars. Its a shame Chasing the Dragon stalled and Tousaint

has left his list of upcoming films. So who knows he might recover?

Or he just might keep on makin those 6 million dollar paychecks for

DTV action movies.

Its funy how so many are incappable of using google to answer their own questions.

Snipes needs money and has needed cash foe a while, IRS problems, Defaults.. you name it, he has a problem with it.

Snipes, like Segal does it for the money.

reply

He does it for the money AND Hollywood won't touch him with his legal problems which could backfire on them, either by interrupting production, or marring their product in the theater box office and DVD sales. They don't want him associated with their stuff while he's got a black cloud hanging over him and a generally bad rep with the public who just read neagtive stuff about him.
Unfortunate. I wish he had just paid his taxes. He is fun to watch.
