Iran

Back in the late 70's and early 80's I had college roommates who were females from Iran.

What I learned from then is that Iran was/had become a hellhole for women. Their parents paid huge amounts of money to get them out of that country in hopes they would have a shot at a better life elsewhere, anywhere. Their mothers who remained behind where forced to wear the Hijab. These were professional, educated women who had lived very modern lives now forced to take an evolutionary step backwards.

Perhaps Dr. Mahmoody regrets what might have been had he remained in the US, perhaps he simply wants revenge, or perhaps Betty's story was a gross exaggeration of what took place.

From what I came to know of Iran of that time frame, I tend to believe her story.

Snicker357,

Good contribution. If only half of Betty Mahmoody's story is accurate in terms of the treatment of women in Iran at that time, I support her right to return to the US with her child and divorce the father.

He failed to see that this would allow him to marry another Iranian woman and have more children if he wanted. That would have to be a more peaceful life for him after the constant strain of living with an independent American woman. LOL. He should thank Betty.

I actually live in an upscale condo complex with a heavy Muslim population (among other international tenants, military and retirees). Many of the women are covered with eyes only showing.

Interestingly, we also have a lot of police response to our building for domestic violence complaints -- not just from these families but others as well (to be fair).

I support freedom of religion as long as those adhering to the religious doctrine do so willingly, and are not forced into a subservient role by that doctrine.

Well Jane, you certainly believe yourself to be quite the Muslim and Middle Eastern expert. Tell me, what ethnicity are these individuals you speak of? Oh, and what sect of Islam do they adhere to? Until you can answer these simple questions and give accurate insight into the issues they relate to, you may want to consider just halting your ignorant talk and listen to people who actually DO know what they are talking about. My best advice, read a legitimate book on the subject, and stop listening to Glenn Beck.

If the women you see are only showing their eyes and nothing else. chances are they are from an Arab country such as Saudi Arabia or even Oman. There are plenty of fundamentalist Christian men that smack their wives around, some even kill these women. You have no right to pick on Muslims, especially since by your postings, you seem to think it is an Ethnicity rather than a religion.

Any man you who abuses his family in the name of religion is wrong, no matter what country. Most middle eastern countries treat their women like *beep* ... in the name of GOD. Religion is the root of what is fundamentally wrong with these countries and for that matter many parts of the US (Christianity). When God has become more important than the people around you something is very wrong. That is how tribes and clans live, not people of the 21 century.

Well, well "cmd254", from what I've learned from several muslims I've talked to, many muslims are under the delusion that muslims can do no wrong and that everything is "allah's will". Therefore, when a muslim woman is beaten/killed by her husband or immediate family or when a young muslim girl is forced into a marriage and raped by her so-called "husband", it's all "allah's will".
