CONNIE AND CARLA
Comedy, Musical
(times & theaters)

Rated PG-13
Directed by: Michael Lembeck
Starring: Nia Vardalos, Toni Collette, David Duchovny, Stephen Spinella
My Big Fat Greek Wedding star and creator Nia Vardalos follows up her comic phenomenon with the sugary, bouncy, laugh-out-loud, cross-dressing comedy Connie and Carla. Cousins Connie (Vardalos) and Carla (Toni Collette) perform a little-seen, musical theater act in a Chicago airport lounge. When they witness a mob hit, they flee to Los Angeles; convinced it's the last place anyone would expect to find musical theater devotees. They discover drag queens for the first time at a West Hollywood bar and pursue their musical theater careers pretending to be men in drag. They take to the stage with scarves tied around their throats, outrageous wigs and thick red lipstick and thicker blue mascara. Of course, because this is a feel-good comedy, their show is a hit. The jokes are familiar in Connie and Carla (directed by Michael Lembeck) with Vardalos borrowing from Blake Edwards' Victor/Victoria, Billy Wilde's Some Like It Hot and the Dustin Hoffman comedy Tootsie. Yet, every gag hits its mark and Vardalos is as likable as ever. Toni Collette makes good use of her toothy grin and clownish body language as the innocent Carla. It's a comic performance equal to her trademark role in Muriel's Wedding. Debbie Reynolds boosts the film's campy spirit with a cameo. David Duchovny's deadpan expressions and aw-shucks personality syncs perfectly with his nice guy character, the brother to the club's bartender (Stephen Spinella). Granted, Connie and Carla offers few surprises, but its rollicking, campy and funny enough not to notice. -- Steve Ramos
