Spoiler --- so why Maria had same gen as William's mother ?

Just watched the movie and i didn't get it why her gen looked 100% like William's mother ? and another stupid question if gen is so similar then what's the problem ?

The society they live in, at least in the big cities, relies on cloning people to populate them... why? never really answered in the movie.
